Need guidance on Sonance MAG6.1 outdoor installation layout

Dear Sonance community,

I recently purchased and installed a Sonance MAG 6.1 speaker/subwoofer system in my backyard and pool area, as shown in the attached image. The installation was completed following the recommended guidelines to provide even audio coverage throughout the outdoor space.

As part of the setup, the amplifier is currently located under the gazebo. Once I finalize the installation, I plan to relocate the amplifier into a temperature-controlled enclosure for added protection. The speaker layout is configured in a L-R-L-Sub-R-L-R arrangement, with the approximate distances between each speaker and the subwoofer reflected in the diagram. The entire system is connected using approximately GearIT 250 ft 14/4 gauge speaker cable to maximize sound coverage around the pool area.

Following the installation guidance provided in several Sonance installation videos, I wired the system as follows:

  • Left speakers: Green (-) / White (+)
  • Right speakers: Red (+) / Black (-)
  • Subwoofer: Connected using all four conductors as instructed

After completing the installation, I powered on the system and performed an initial sound check. The audio quality was excellent, and everything appeared to be functioning as expected. However, after approximately ten minutes of operation, the music suddenly stopped playing. I then noticed that the indicator light on the amplifier was blinking red, and the amplifier itself had become noticeably warm to the touch.

Out of caution, I immediately powered the system down. Since then, I have been concerned that I may have inadvertently created a wiring issue or otherwise overloaded the system during installation.

I would sincerely appreciate any guidance you could provide regarding the possible cause of this behavior. In particular, I am hoping to understand whether the issue could be related to the speaker layout, wiring configuration, cable run lengths, or any other aspect of the installation. I am happy to provide additional information that may help with troubleshooting. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Thank you!

Hate to say it but this is a Sonos community, not Sonance.

Sonos does resell a few Sonance speakers but not the MAG line.

Yeah, what @Stanley_4 said.  There have been those who tried to combine Sonos and the Sonance MAG system, but powering 6.1 speakers via the two channel Sonos AMP is definitely a non-standard application and not supported by either company.

This sound like the Best Buy package of outdoor speakers with a Sonos Amp, thought that is a 4.1 system.   The only thing I would recommend is verify that the speakers present an 8 ohm resistance to the amp.  If that checks out, then check your connections.

I don't think they have a Sonos Amp, the sub wiring mentioned seems to indicate some other brand amplifier.

Thank you Stanley. Unfortunately there is not a Sonance community (or at least I couldn’t find one) where I could post the issue with my setup. I did come across a few Sonance mentioned within this community so thought of trying my luck here.

At least tell folks what amplifier you are using, maybe someone has an idea.

Thanks Jgatie. The layout/configuration within the installation manual for connecting the 6 speakers and the sub (shown below) is what I followed. Many of the online installation videos does emulate/recommend this setup as well. I am unclear what the issue with my setup and (naively) thinking out loudly here whether 1. if the 250ft length is too long and beyond what this system can support (although the manual says this should be fine), or 2. if the distance between the speakers should be of same length (I placed mine a little unevenly due to the way the landscape is structured).

Apologies. It is a Best buy package (Sonos AMP, 6 speakers, 1 sub)

Ah, you do have a Sonos Amp, therein lies the problem, it is a stereo amplifier, rated to drive at most two pair of 8 Ohm speakers (3 if they are the sepcial ones sold directly by Sonos) and you have three, non-Sonos, speaker pairs plus a subwoofer attached. Way too little resistance for the Sonos Amp and it is shutting down to avoid burning out due to the overload that causes.

The sub connection may be an additional issue to the load, unless it has isolated, dual voice coils. Sonos doesn't recommend interconnecting the output channels in any manner.

You could try disconnecting all but one pair of speakers and see if it works, then try two. Also try one pair and the sub to see. If both of these work a second Sonos Amp, Grouped with the first might work. One to two pair of speakers, one to the other spewkers and sub.

Our posts crossed, if Best Buy sold you this make them make it right.

I can't get past the Best Buy pop-ups to see that page but unless the speakers are high resistance ones I can't see this working.

Gotcha! I will try your suggestion of disconnecting and testing with 1 speaker and then 2 and so on… and the speaker/sub combo… I was avoiding a second AMP but may not have a choice to support all 6 speaker and sub.

I wonder all the online installation videos encountered the issue I’m having…

Found the Sonance MAG6.1 page, not much info.

https://sonance.com/products/mag6-1

It says it is a dual voice coil sub so that is good.

They say it is an impedance matched 8 Ohm system, if that is right it should work. IF.

No clue where your issue is, could be miswired or a bad speaker so trying to isolate the problem as above might help.

As much as I dislike Best Buy getting them to sort it (and not void your return options) is probably best.

Luckily I did purchase protection plan and may have to put it to use… The speaker/sub specs doesn’t seem anything unusual... I’m not an expert in this though

That 4 Ohm per channel should work but I have no clue how they have accomplished that.

Supposedly these come to 5 ohm. But the specs don’t say what impedance the speakers are. This was in the Best Buy Q&A and answered by a Sonance rep:
  • Q: QuestionWill the mag 6.1 amplifier handle 2 additional speakers?

Asked 2 hours ago by Additional.

    • A:Answer Hi, Thank you for your question. We do not recommend adding two additional speakers to the MAG6.1 system. The included six satellite speakers and subwoofer are the maximum configuration for the included Sonos Amp; adding additional speakers will exceed its impedance limits and cause performance issues or damage to the amplifier. If you need additional coverage, you will need to purchase a second MAG6.1 system. I hope you found this information helpful. If you have additional questions, please feel free to call our California-based support team at 949-492-7777 and ask for Tech Support. We are available Monday through Friday, 6 am to 5 pm PST. I'm hoping someone else here has some idea, this setup should work.

Hopefully you have a defective speaker or something else simple wrong.

  • August 3, 2026

I would do what Stanley_4 suggested and start with 1 pair. Check. Add another. Etc. Check your wiring. Check for bare wire, loose strands at connectors, anything that might be shorting out.

Hi Rupesh, this could be unrelated to the specific issue you may be having...but I recall the blinking red light usually means the full app setup was not completed within 30 mins. Also with the Sonos + Sonance setup , just wondering if you have the “Detect Sonos Architectural” feature on or not with the setup. Sonos + Sonance 6.1 requires this setting which unlocks special digital processing and impedance matching.

How to run the feature

  • Open the Sonos App on your mobile device.
  • Tap Settings and select System.
  • Choose the specific Room where your Sonos Amp is located.
  • Scroll down to the Products section and select the Amp.
  • Tap Detect Sonos Architectural and follow the audio prompts.

Only Sonance, as sold by Sonos, meet the requirements for that, all other Sonance are not supported.
