amp mounting upside down

Hi,

I’m planning on a ceiling mount for the amp, where the amp would be upside down and there is nothing in amp manual that specifically either allows or prohibits that orientation. The amp would be screwed onto a metal plate about 50mm wide and 250mm long which in turn would be screwed to joists in the ceiling. Would that create a problem with ventilation, if so would it need to be spaced off the ceiling to allow airflow, or would I have to construct a U shaped bracket to mount the right way up and how much gap between the top of the amp and the ceiling - looking at pictures of the rack mount I would imagine ½ inch would be more than adequate

I'd call support and ask.

I thought there was a mounting plate for wall and ceiling use but I'm not seeing it.

The only concern I’d express is that warm air usually floats up, not down (check your physics textbook for why), and mounting it upside down isn’t, as I recall, what it was designed for. However, it’s entirely possible the effect is negligible, too…but I’d still want to provide some ‘space’ to allow full airflow around the device, as much as possible. I’d think mounting it off the ceiling by half an inch would be enough, but that’s neither a Sonos employee, or a physics/sound engineer speaking.

You can search for Sonos Amp Mount. Some of the ones shown in the link should work

https://www.amazon.com/s

I’ve always been partial to Flexson products for Sonos. However, it seems their Amp mounts are shown as “Coming Soon”

This one might work and is available from Sonos:

Sanus Wall Mount for Sonos Amp

The best I could find on mounting/ventilation was in the product guide:

“If put on a shelf, place at the front and keep 3" (minimum) clearance on all sides.”

“Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.”

“Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus that produce heat.”

That’s the same mount that’s in the Sonos store.

I thought it was but searching the store for Amp didn't find it. Why does Sonos have so many issues making the search tools work?

Skipping the search option you can filter, that finds it. Search is at the top of the page, filter not so obvious.

I don’t even bother with their search. I remembered seeing it in Shop -> Accessories. So I just scrolled until I found it.

Someone needs to have a chat with someone and  discuss the difference in an on-line sales website,  where you make it easy for folks to find and buy stuff, and a scavenger hunt, where you make everything hard to find and force folks to jump through non-obvious hoops.

Maybe also discuss the concept of "leaving money on the table" and why it is a bad thing?

Do they realize forcing someone to use an external search tool presents them with a half-dozen non-Sonos options?

Looking at that, I'm so glad I'm not a moderator here and have to figure out how to kick this topic up the food chain. Good luck guys, you are appreciated.

Yeah, because discussing the search function with Gainsight has been so productive in the past.  😅

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, however I have chatted with a technician and his ad vice is that as the manual does not give upside mounting as an option then they would not recommend it, So a more complex bracket now needed.

The Sanus website states their mount is Designed for flexible placement – mount Amp vertically or upside-down

I'd trust Sanus' public statement on a website before I'd trust a support person on the phone.  Sanus knows more about their products than someone reading a script.

Also Sonos resells that mount, if they disagree with the inverted option it is unlikely they would recommend and sell it.

Thanks for this, but on the Sonos page it is only classed as a wall mount.
I have had a further reply on the chat:
There is no internal documentation that advices otherwise so it would be a matter of testing, just make sure the Amp has proper ventilation. If you encounter issues with volume clamping down to 15 or the Amp flashing red or it stops producing audio and it not because of ventilation, it may be that the orientation is causing the issues. Also, it is recommended in case that the Amp needs to be factory reset that it's somewhat accessible as the reset process requires a button press

I’m disappointed that Sonos cannot give a better response and on balance I do not want to take the risk so a more ugly U shaped cradle bracket to mount the right way up under the ceiling is what I am going for

I’ve been trying to visualize your mounting of the Amp upside down on a joist that typically runs perpendicular to a floor or ceiling between floors.  Can you post a drawing? It doesn’t have to be professional just a crude rendering will suffice.

Even if the mounting plate is positioned between two joists why would the amp need to be upside down?

This is a picture of the install site, it would go just to the right of the cctv into a wooden ce

This is directly from the Sanus site, and is the same mount sold in the Sonos store.

Are you conversing with the chat bot? I don’t think I would trust that to give accurate information.

This is a view of the Amp’s internal circuitry. No moving parts.

Once again, the Sonos support person/bot is just trying to BS their way through a call that they don't have a script for.  People are far too reliant on support staff that, while admirable in their jobs, are not actual experts.  They are script readers, and are instructed to give nebulous "do no harm" answers for anything not in the script.  Their bots are programmed the same way.
