I currently have a non-sonos receiver running surround in my living room. Am I able to connect any of the sonos subwoofers to this system and have it work with both TV and music? I feel like I tried to do this initially and it didn't work.

No, Sonos subwoofers are designed to be part of (bonded to) other Sonos speakers, and not a separate device that can be connected to your receiver, or other non-Sonos speakers.
