Line in adapter

Have a new Era 300 and Line-In function is NOT working at all. I have several 3.5mm to USB-C adapters and have tried them all with no success. A factory reset of the Era 300 also made no difference. The app shows Disconnected even when the cable is connected. Do I really need to spend the $19 of the “official” Sonos brand line-in adapter for this to work or should any other brand theoretically do the trick. Or is there another problem here?

Most adapters are set to convert in the wrong direction.

The Sonos adapter converts in the right direction.

Haven’t seen anyone posting about a non-Sonos one that worked for them.
