I have 2 play 5s out on my patio by the pool. I want to connect a third party sub to those for more base outside. Can I use a connect amp S2 to connect the sub through the sub port only and not use the speaker connections as the play 5 will be in use instead?

Yes, you can use the Sub port of the Sonos Connect Amp to connect a third party sub to your Sonos Eco system and then use the group and ungroup feature on the Sonos App to group the connect amp with the 3rd party Sub with the Play 5s that you have.
