Is the boost device designed to be only hardwired to the network > or can it be used as a stand-alone signal repeater?

It can be a signal repeater, it does not need to be connected via Ethernet. It goes without saying that it can only be used to extend a Sonosnet (aka "Boost") setup, it is not a standard WiFi repeater.

Also note that the BOOST would only be employed as a SonosNet relay if the distant players are otherwise unable to get a wireless signal. If they're already working, the unwired BOOST would most likely be ignored.
