Question

wall high / Ceiling Era 300 Placement

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to use two Sonos Era 300 speakers as surrounds in an open-plan living room, behind my sofa. (right below where the Bose speaksers are today). The tv will be above the fireplace with the ultra arc below it.

Because of the room layout, the best available position (in my opinion) is high on the wall, just below a low ceiling beam/soffit, behind the left and right corners of the sofa. They will be close to the ceiling—definitely within 60 cm / 2 ft.

Should I mount the Era 300 speakers inverted (upside down) or upright in this position?

They will be used as surrounds with a Sonos home-theater setup (ultra ARC and sub gen 4 )

I understand the ideal surround position is closer to ear height, but wall mounting them high is the only practical option in this room. I will run Trueplay after installation.

I would appreciate any advice on:

  • Whether inverted mounting is correct in this specific high-wall position

  • Whether they should face straight forward or be angled slightly down toward the listening position

  • How far behind and to the side of the sofa they should ideally be

  • Any other placement ideas as i dont have power on the floor

Thanks!

Inverted is almost necessary as otherwise the top Atmos speaker is blocked.

I have a 300 set mounted within inches of my ceiling and inverted wasn't an option as they are sitting on a cabinet. Compared to another 300 Pair placed better, you notice the height difference on some Atmos content, not on others. I just stream, and  based on what I hear from them I wouldn't consider that position for TV use.

You can angle the 300s some, they are position sensitive so you have to stay within their limits. I wouldn't angle as that might slightly improve 5.1 sound but may disrupt Atmos imaging. Try it and go with your ears when listening to your content.

Where will you place your TV?
