General request for a new model for external

Good morning. I’d like to ask if you happen to be working on an outdoor model—similar to the Five—that simply needs to be plugged into a power outlet and can use the home Wi-Fi network (perhaps boosted by a mesh system). Thanks.

Seems unlikely, any device designed for ‘outside’ probably wouldn’t include a power cord, due to electrical shock considerations. But Sonos doesn’t pre-announce what they’re working on, we in the public just wait until sufficient and substantial rumors are reported, which are often incorrect anyway (see the rumor that the Beam was going to be able to be used as surrounds).

Your best bet is likely to get your own outside speakers, and power them with a aSonos Amp. There are third parties, I think, that make outside ‘cases’ for the Amp, so you might potentially mount it outside, but electrically, you’d be better off with it inside (both safer electrically and WiFi reception) and wires running to the outside rated speakers that you’ve chosen.

Depending on the size speaker you are considering an Amp in a waterproof case mounted directly to it could serve quite well.

Add some speaker terminals and hooking up a stereo pair would be quite easy. Maybe even add a second pair for more coverage.

Please note that my intentions would be to install them outside, but nonetheless under a cover that can protect them from direct water... for the plug there are dedicated and fireproof boxes... having outdoor systems still with an external amplifier to power them I find that a thing that is now outdated, especially since it is thought that I also have a Move 2 and it works in any condition and context and has an integrated amplifier.. it would be nice something similar to the Five with an integrated amplifier and you only have to connect the plug... we have arrived on Mars I do not think this for the engineering department is a big obstacle to overcome... you just need to have the desire and will to do it... it would be nice if they would commit to doing it in a short time to also beat current competition and I would be one of the first to take at least a pair... currently the outdoor boxes they produce I do not intend to take them for a matter of box breakage of the immense work to be done to pull cables that maybe in 4 or 5 years later with those cables I can use them to hang out the clothes

“having outdoor systems still with an external amplifier to power them I find that a thing that is now outdated,

I do not believe this will ever be outdated.

Your last statement seems contradictory, because you want wireless speakers that will be installed in a specific location for primary use. Outdoor speakers are made for that type of application.

The Move 2 is a great speaker that mostly suits what you wish to achieve. It is larger than the other plug in single speakers and provides great lows. Why not simply purchase a second unit?

All three answers here are suggesting the same solution for outdoor audio.

I do not believe any manufacturer is going to put time into developing a “wireless Installed” speaker..

But I have been wrong before

Because I would like a fixed system and not mobile, so two fixed speakers and not mobile like the move that I carry with me... it would be nice to have them structured in this way and in my opinion it would make sense and it would also find space on a commercial level... let's see if maybe the engineers would like to develop the dedicated model...

Given the Amp can paired with 3rd party outdoor speakers or there is teh Move and Play with outdoor protection and no fear of electrical issues, I am not sure what the product is that Sonos should make?

A waterproof ERA 100 or 300 maybe but as above the Move fits that very well and your use case is not probably not common enough to warrant a whole new model.

I have two moves that I have outside for most of the summer and have hooks for them to sit on.  When then need a charge they will go to the garage or i have on occasion used a decent Battery Pack to charge them.

Uhhhh, so don’t move it?  What is it about the Move (besides the obvious) which requires it to be moved?  I needed a small bathroom speaker that can survive the steam and humidity of that environment.  I’ve had a Roam in there that has never been disconnected from power.  Works great (and sure beats waiting for Sonos to make a Roam type speaker with no portable functionality).

As jgatie stated, you can just leave a Sonos portable connected to power all the time.  Sonos is not going to recommend that you leave your portable outside all the time as that just opens them up for warranty issues.   You can do it, you own the product, but if it fails, it will be on you.

The reason powered wireless speakers makes sense indoors is because you usually have power outlets near where you need them, and wiring passive speakers to a amp isn’t going to be aesthetically pleasing.  Outdoor, you are unlikely  to have power near where you  need it, so your going to have cables running to your speaker for anything permanent.  Your options

  • You can have high voltage lines (110 or 220v typically that your speaker will convert to low voltage) and wireless data communication.
  • low voltage (USB) and wireless communication.
  • POE that carries low voltage and communcation
  • speaker wire that carries low voltage power and communication

The first option seems like the most expense and least reliable idea. The 2nd and third options are better, but require you to have the the expensive processing outside where it’s more likely to fail.  I get that modern devices are better able to handle it, but it’s still not as reliable as keeping that indoors.  If you insist though, you can use a Move/Play ourdoors with USB power, and never use the battery (I do wonder if this a market for a version of these sans battery).  Or, you could get Era 100s with POE and plan on replacing them due to weather.  I’ve been rather happy with my passive speakers that have lasted out in the open in weather for a decade now.

BTW, Era300s outside is a bad idea, as there is no walls to bounce audio off of.

Hi @RC17

I don’t know the answer to that question. But you will have a better chance getting an answer if you start a new topic with your question. Posting that question in this topic may not get the eyeballs needed to give you an answer.

Given no new thread:

In general, read https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/trueplay-compatible-devices-and-sonos-products

It’s likely, given the newness of the iPhone 18 Pro Max, it is as yet unsupported for TruePlay.

I have my suspicions as why, but usually TruePlay tends to be delayed by at least, if not more than 6 months…
