Sonos app seems to operates independently on my iPad and iPhone. Not long ago they operated as one device seemlessly!

They have always been independent. A controller (iPad, iPhone, Android, PC, MAC, Web) attaches itself to a SONOS player. The controller passes commands to the players and receives status replies trough it’s attached player. The attached player communicates with other players.
What has changed for you? Have you added players or changed the network?
Put a different way, the controller is merely a window on what is happening on the app that runs on the speakers, and not a separate app running on its own. It’s a lot like a remote control for your television, it merely gives commands to the OS on your speakers.
The only other thing I could think of was two separate systems set up on the same network subnet ;) Glad you figured it out!
