I am running Sonos S2 through 7 Sonos devices.

I want to know if I can tell my Alexa Dot to play something through my Sonos system. When I try this now, Alexa tells me it is using Amazon Music and then plays the song through the Alexa device, not Sonos.

If this IS possible, is it also possible for Alexa to launch songs or a Playlist from my personal Music Library and play them on Sonos?

I have many songs and Playlists set up in itunes. I launch Sonos on my computer, use my Music Library to add a Playlist or songs to my queue, and Sonos plays my music just fine.

I have enabled Sonos in my Alexa app. I have both Sonos and itunes open on my computer.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Yes, this is possible.  See this link: https://support.sonos.com/s/article/3439?language=en_US

This is not possible.  However, once launched via the Sonos app, you can FF/RW/Stop/Resume and ask Alexa what is playing.

These few support links should also help to get you started with streaming music playback on your Sonos devices using the Amazon Alexa Service…

In your command to Alexa, have you tried adding the applicable Room Name of the Sonos player?

For instance, “Alexa, play XXX on Kitchen”.

Also make sure your Alexa Dot does not have the same name as any of your Sonos Room Names.

Thank you for responding.

I am working on it now and realize that I have some cleaning up to do first:

A couple of my Sonos units and my Dots have the same name.

I have some “groups”...I think I need to delete them and start again.

It is all further complicated by the fact that I have an identical system in my summer cottage, but I think that’s OK because those Sonos units have different names and are offline now.

I will keep at it and let you know how I’m doing.

Thanks again!

Got it!

After a great deal of fussing, my 4 Alexa Dots are in a group, and my 7 Sonos speakers are linked to it. The Sonos app does not need to be running in order to launch through Alexa. Sweet!

There will be times when I don’t want the Sonos speakers playing in every room (maybe someone is asleep, etc.). I have discovered that I can open the Sonos app on my phone and remove speakers from the Sonos group, or just turn the volume way down in that room. This works even if the music is already playing.

Thanks!!!

As long as Alexa has properly “found” all your devices, and you have microphone activated, with the appropriate music service(s) added to Sonos S2, your system should work as you desire.

This is terrific for now. I look forward to the time when Alexa can access my personal Playlists (set up through itunes, stored on my computer, and played through the Sonos app) but really, it’s no great hardship to access them on my phone or computer. It all seems like magic anyway!
