Can I play a Pandora station on both the Echo and my Sonos Play:3 simultaneously so it's essentially having two connected speakers?

No. There is no abilty to group Echo and Sonos, nor will it be probable in the future. The symcing technology is vastly different.

Currently it doesn’t work but I don’t understand how their “syncing is different”.

I posted a similar question here. Maybe check it out.

Their syncing is different because they use different technologies to achieve syncing. Sonos uses a patented scheme to achieve synchronization and I highly doubt they are going to allow other speakers to use that technology, just to have them cut into sales of Sonos devices.
