Alexa wont play any music

Hello,

Randomly 2 weeks ago, Alexa stopped working on all my smart home devices, all the skills were deleted from the Alexa app and all my smart home products weren't working. So I went through and ive re-added everything and re-linked all the skills. I have everything working except for Alexa playing music on any of my Sonos devices - it works if I use an amazon eco though. Alexa works on the Sonos devices if I ask her a question or to control a smart home device like the heating, but she just cant play any music, weather thats from amazon music, Spotify or any radio stations. I have tried removing Alexa from all the devices, removing the skill, then setting it up all again and it wont work.

Do the Sonos devices show in the Alexa app?

When asking Alexa to play music on a Sonos speaker...

  • Do you just say Alexa play music?
  • Do you ask Alexa to play something specific? *

In both instances does Alexa give a reason such as “I’m having trouble... or I can’t play that right now”….

Also, are all “Your Skills” enabled in the Alexa App which includes music

 * If I ask Alexa to play smooth jazz she’ll respond with “Watercolors from SiriusXM”. SiruisXM is my default music service in the Sonos app. FYI…Whenever you delete/reinstall the Sonos app (and possibly on updates) Sonos Radio is set as default.

I have “upgraded” to Alexa Plus and downgraded several times.  In my experience, Alexa Plus cannot process the Sonos skill. Disabling Alexa Plus resolves the issue with Sonos.  However, many other things that used to work with regular Alexa now require Alexa Plus.  Pick your poison.

I have Sonos devices that only use basic Alexa and Alexa Devices that use Alexa plus. No conflict between the two. In fact the Alexa plus devices show what I’ve played on my Sonos. I’ve not done any down grading of Alexa capable Sonos devices because they never transitioned to Alexa Plus. Therefore I don’t understand your comment about “downgrading”.

Alexa Plus works to play on a Sonos room.  I don’t use Alexa voice control on any of Sonos speakers.  I’m talking to an Amazon Echo when I request that music be played on a particular Sonos speaker.  I just have to include the Sonos room name in the request.

I have enabled Alexa Plus, then disabled Alexa Plus several times. Just tell her to “Enable” or “Disable” Alexa Plus as appropriate. You can go back and forth to test.

That is not possible if your Alexas are all registered to the same Amazon account.  Upgrade one, you upgrade all. You cannot have some using “basic” and some using Plus.

I have all of my Alexa devices grouped with one or more Sonos speakers.  Using “basic” Alexa, if I say, “Alexa, Play XXX from Service”, she will say, “Playing XXX from Richard’s Service on Sonos” and it will play on the grouped Sonos speaker(s).  Using Alexa Plus, she will say, “XXX from Service”, and she may or may not play on the grouped speaker. Most often nothing plays, but sometimes it will work. That;s why I’ll use Alexa Plus for a while but have always disabled it to try again in a few weeks.

I’m confused. Not all (older) Amazon devices work with Alexa Plus. What happens to those when you update your account? Do they stop working completely?

I’m not going to continue arguing this point. However, as of today Sonos devices do not support Alexa Plus. That’s not to say that Sonos won’t support Alexa Plus in the future; but not as of May 3, 2026.

In fact Alexa Plus is a pay subscription for non-Prime Members. Even so, I as a Prime Member cannot get Alexa Plus integration on my voice enabled Sonos devices.

FYI, there is a distinct difference in the interaction with Alexa on Sonos versus that with an Alexa Plus compatible device. The interaction is conversational. Not so on a Sonos device.

Below are devices that currently use/support Alexa Plus. Sonos is not mentioned as one. See the full write-up here.
