Alexa integration: two rooms

Good morning,

I am testing my alexa integration and I have an issue: multi room sounds

My setup:

  • Living room: sonos arc with “built in alexa”.
  • My son’s bedroom with a echo dot 5th gen and an old sonos playbar as a speaker

Both set-ups work pretty good with their alexa (either integrated or via echo dot) but one command:

Sonos arc/playbar alexa commands:

  • play music in the living room: works
  • play music in son’s room: works
  • play music everywhere: doesn’t work
    • Sonos app shows both speaker are playing correctly
    • Playbar won’t play any sound

If I give the command from Snos arc with “Sonos AI”:

  • play music everywhere (via sonos “AI”): works

Since the alexa command works de facto (sonos app showing both playing) I suspect it has something to do with some sonos app bags.

Anybody would have an idea on how to solve this ?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, it's exactly what I did. Start playing with alexa and copy with sonos AI.

The point is, sonos app shows everything is working and plying the same track, with no sound.

I guess I will give a call to the support.

Maybe is just the playbar too old 🤔

I’m just spitballing here, as I generally (these days) don’t use voice commands, but have you created a speaker group in Alexa’s software named ‘everywhere’ that includes the Sonos PLAYBAR?

Yes, I've wrote it in the alexa commands session.

Alexa is working, and forwarding the command to sonos: playbar and arc are shown grouped in the sonos app and both are playing (moving of the sound equalizer icon) but no sound from playbar.

Odd. I’d probably call Sonos Support directly to discuss it, given the lack of other suggestions.

When you speak directly to the phone folks, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

I’m not sure ‘play everywhere’ is a good choice when your Alexa rooms have preferred speakers setup.  I am going from memory, but I thought ‘everywhere’ is a specific command for Alexa enabled devices only.  I would probably setup an Alexa group called ‘whole house’, or something similar, that contains the living room and the son’s room and see if you get better results that way.

I have created the group "home".

Again sonos app shows the music everywhere.

But playbar is not playing (camera di milo).

I also tried to put a song on my son's bedroom via alexa.

This as said works.

Then I went in the living room and asked to sonos, "copy the music from Milo's room and play it here".

This made the app showing the music playing on both again, but this time it didn't play on the arc.

There is defenetly an issue from sonos side. The voice commands work and produce a visible effect on the app, but no sound from either one or the other.

The only way it works is to start from sonos voice command.

I wonder if it has something to do with Apple music which has a 5 second lag.

Grouping on the fly (i.e. playing music in one room first, then grouping in another room) is not possible with Alexa.  You can only initiate music to a group.  Grouping on the fly is possible via Sonos voice by saying “Group X with Y” where X is the room you wish to group in and Y is the room playing the music.

The plot thickened:

After telling the command with alexa, to play in the whole hause.

I can get the sound out the either device if I pause thebother one.

So, i see both playing, no sound from one or the other. Pausing one make the other play...
