Hi.

the issue im having here right now is that I can’t change the wake word on arc as someone in the house has a similar name. The only way to change (as I have researched) is to get a dot, place near the arc, disable the arc voice control.

then group the arc and dot in Alexa app in the same room (living room in this instance). And set preferred speaker as the arc.

now, here’s where it gets messy. I have change the wake word to echo on the dot. When I call out echo on the dot, it responded on the dot. I thought it was suppose to respond through the arc? When I call echo on the dot to play music, it somehow says…playing Spotify on Sonos and the arc plays music.

i tried bringing this dot to another room, group it with a full fledge echo speaker, set preferred speaker to full fledge echo. When I speak to the dot, it responded through the echo speaker. When I speak to the dot to play music, it DID not play on the echo but on the dot. Wtf..?

I don’t really care about the echo and dot scenario. I just want the first issue to be resolve, ie speak to the dot and Alexa reply through the arc. Help please?

Only music will come through the Arc when configured that way.  Replies and announcements will still come from the Dot.

And there has never been a way to change a wake word on a Sonos product. Not sure if that restriction comes from Sonos, or Amazon.

That’s new to me…

Been that way since day 1 of the Alexa implementation.

Definitely so.  And, in my view, a positive feature.  I don’t want the volume of Alexa’s responses to depend on the media volume.

Btw, you said “The only way to change (as I have researched) is to get a dot, place near the arc, ...”

You have researched the solution very well here, give or take a couple of points.  One of those points is that it isn’t necessary to place the Dot near thr Arc.  Better to place it where it can hear you, and near the Arc is probably the worst place in that respect.  (This is another advantage of Dot + Sonos speaker over voice control on Sonos.)

Maybe some of what you want to do could be accomplished using Sonos Voice Control?

I have a ceiling fan… that has a light as well. But Alexa recognise it as a fan. I’m having difficulty to voice control the light. When I ask it to turn on the device, the fan is on but not the light. How do you guys navigate around this?

In the Alexa App, can you see and control the light? If Yes I suggest you create an Alexa Group containing both the light and fan. When you turn the group on both devices will switch on.

Yes can. But I can’t voice command it to turn on the light. When I say on device, it turn the fan function on. I can separate them. Ie I just want to turn on light

I suspect that the light is a different device with it's own unique name.

I would have thought that this depends entirely on the options made available by the manufacturer of the fan / light in their Alexa integration. You need to find out what the legitimate forms of command are.

I don't think this has anything to do with Sonos.

Agreed.  In case, the light and fan where originally setup to two different wall switches,   I replace each dumb wall switch with smart ones, one for fan and one for the light.  One of the switches is named ‘bedroom fan’ and the other is named ‘bedroom light’.  I cannot simply say ‘turn on the fan’ as Alexa doesn’t intuitively know what the switch does per say, but using the exact name, ‘bedroom fan’, works perfectly. In short, how the electrician originally setup my wiring made things simple for me.

However, if you only have one switch, than you’re going to need some sort of smart fan/light that Alexa recognizes accordingly.  Again, nothing to do with Sonos directly.

I have Echo speakers in different rooms.  It does not matter which one I use as long as I ask her to  “Play music in the ( Sonos Room name )” it works just fine.  I could be in the room furthest away from the Sonos Room and it still works.  All my Echo speakers have different Wake words.

As far as Echo commands for lights, plugs, fans etc just give those devices unique memorable names rather than using the default names given to those devices.

I also use Sonos Voice Control on some of the Sonos Rooms.
