Trouble adding new Sonos Connect device on Firewalla VLAN

Last year I purchased a Firewalla Gold Firewall and split my network into several VLANS. Amongst others, I have a dedicated VLAN assigned to my Sonos Connect amplifiers and another VLAN for user WIFI. My Sonos appliances are mostly connected with Cat 6. Some are connected over WIFI. One way traffic is enabled between the WIFI VLAN and the Sonos VLAN. I also have a Sonos Bridge on the network. This setup has been working well for about a year.

Recently I purchased a couple of new Sonos Connect (app V1) amplifiers. I am able to find them on the Sonos App but when I press the button(s) on the appliance to complete the setup, nothing happens. It seems like some traffic is being blocked but I don’t know what or where. I have enabled bi-directional traffic between the WIFI and Sonos VLANs but that did not help. mDNS relay and SSDP relay are enabled on both networks.

Does anyone know what happens when you press the physical button(s) on the Sonos connect once the device is ready to be added to the system? What kinds of packets are sent? From where to where? I placed both the new Connect Amp and the Sonos bridge on the same unmanaged switch just for testing but this did not help. I do have many other Sonos Connect amplifiers on the network just FYI.

It is also worth noting that all my switches are managed and that IGMP snooping is disabled on all of them. I have 4x Aruba InstantOn 1930 and 1960 switches and the Sonos devices are spread amongst them. The WIFI access points all connect to these managed switches.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do next?

I really appreciate your help.

I can try to remove the Sonos Bridge and see what that does.

Just to be clear, all devices are on the same network - albeit a VLAN. They all also have access to the internet. Only my phone (which I use to control the Sonos appliances) is on a different network. But traffic is enabled between them. With the exception of not being able to add new devices, everything works. Something special must happen when you click the buttons on the Sonos Connect as the last step of adding it to the network and I would like to understand what that is.

Just put your phone on the same VLAN as your Sonos gear. Or at least as long as it takes to add the newer devices.

Be wary of that Bridge, they are long obsolete and Sonos recommends removing them.

Just looking at your post gives me a headache. Sonos wants to be on a single LAN with devices, controllers and music library server all there. Unfiltered access to the Internet is good but you can dig out the required destinations and white-list them and get it to work.

Good luck.

I was going to suggest same. Just create a SSID on the same VLAN as your Sonos devices, connect your phone to that SSID to setup devices. You can then reconnect to your original separate WiFi network as before once setup, you said you have no issues with your Firewall rules with using Sonos, just the setup of a new device.

Recently I purchased a couple of new Sonos Connect (app V1) amplifiers.

One other thought, you said a ‘new’ connect, it must be used?  There is a possibility if they have been used in the original upgrade program, they could be in recycle mode, and unusable.

Avoiding the VLAN mess was easy for me, hung a switch off an open LAN port on my router, hooked my Sonos, NAS and controller to that LAN.

Having everything Sonos on a dedicated LAN also bypassed my DNS filters and firewall rules.

Putting the iPhone on the same VLAN as the SONOS worked! Thank you so much for your help!
