Cisco 9800 WLC Connection Issues

Hello Everyone,

New to the forum and I have some issues that some tech guys like me might be able to help with.

I'm the Network Administrator for a small junior college. Our athletics program recently purchased to two Era 300 speakers. I am struggling to keep them connected to our WLAN/SSID and using the app to be able to communicate with them.

I want to ensure that its not the networking side that the issue.

My question: anyone else on here who uses a Cisco 9800 WLC that would be willing to share there configuration of their WLAN/Policy/RF tags?

I've looked over the documentation on Sonos support website and it does not seem like they need anything special compared to other IOT devices.

Thank for any help in advance!

As long as they are on the same LAN and don't need to login, other than the standard wifi password they should work.

If you are doing client isolation or any other process that imparts the basic wifi connection there may be issues.

If you search Support for "wifi" you will get the basic Sonos requirements.

Thanks for the reply @Stanley_4 .

They are on the same SSID, VLAN, and subnet.

Client isolation is disable everywhere know to in our Meraki router and C9800 WLC (17.12.5).

Multicast I believe may be the main issue since I can see that both speakers are connected to the SSID.

I can not find any documents as to how the speakers communicate with the App. It makes troubleshooting pretty difficult.

Got off the phone with 3 different support agents that do not know the difference of ISP, routers, WLC, etc. So I have given up on phone support. They sent me some generic points for wireless connectivity but all things I have already seen online. I'm pretty frustrated with the products. It a shame too since they are very high quality.

The usual advice for folks on complex networks is to get a travel router and connect the Sonos devices and controller to it.

Keep an eye open for replies, there are some folks here with more experience.

For S2 systems:

The app finds the speakers using SSDP and mDNS (so multicast is important)

The app communicates with them using web sockets, and the speakers callback to the app the same way.

For S1 systems and most third party apps on S2:

The app finds the speakers using SSDP.

The app communicates with them using UPnP.

The speakers callback to the app using UPnP Events.

VLAN support is a challenge. Make sure the app and the speakers are on the same VLAN (and subnet).

Hello @controlav ,

Thank you so much for you reply! This is information I can work with and give to Cisco for troubleshooting.

Our environment uses strictly the S2 app and all devices will be in same VLAN and subnet by design.

Do you have a list of services that the app uses for mDNS? We have had to set up mDNS in the past for our nursing department. To get their equipment to work, we had to add custom services used by the company to our wireless controller.

If you prefer this list not be available on a public forum, I am more than happy to provide my email address. Thanks again!

I know very little about mDNS, so can’t help you there. I’ve never written any code using it. You should be able to see the services used with a network trace of the app starting up.

Understood. Thanks for your time and I plan to update the forum post if I and Cisco TAC are able to come up with a solution!
