What current speaker(s) compatible with play:1, play:3 and Playbar

Hi,

I have play:1’s, a play:3 and Playbar.

I have the Sonos S1 app controller for these.

I wish to add another speaker but can no longer buy play:1’s as they are discontinued.

If I buy the Era 100 Sl or Era 100 can I add these to my existing set up (ie will they all be compatible with each other [the old and new ] and which app will I be able to use to control them all - the Sonos S1 app or the Sonos app?

thanks in advance

No current speakers are compatible with S1.  If you upgraded to S2, all current speakers can be in the same system as the units you have, meaning they can be grouped together.  No current speakers can be used as surrounds with a Playbar.

If you are using a local music library, you should be aware that S2 uses (and requires) newer versions of the SMB protocol used for file sharing. S2 requires SMB v2 or v3 where the S1 system used v1.

What is an SMB protocol? I use iTunes for music- stored on a windows 11 laptop. I have iTunes playlists on my iPhone. Currently use Sonos S1 app on both the laptop and the iPhone to control the Sonos speakers / volume / etc. Where do I need to change the SMB protocol?

SMB is a method by which computers talk to data structures, like an NAS. I’m simplifying somewhat, read the link.

Dou you use a Sonos Bridge in your set up? You do not mention it, but the Bridge is not S2 capable.

I don’t use a bridge - only the speakers listed

OK. Then @jgatie ’s advice stands: time to call Sonos.

Another possibility is to not upgrade to S2. Just purchase used from a reputable reseller on ebay or somewhere else. Then there’s no complications from upgrading. Downside is not being able to use new sonos gear.

I maintain both S1 and S2 systems here. I use new products for home theater with S2 and play music with S1 gear. Works well for us.

So it took 5.5 hours of chatting with Sonos support and eventually got upgraded to Sonos S2 software - involved a lot of re-testing. Feels more clunky & slower than S1 and can’t seem to play YouTube through anything other than my play 5 as the other speakers are not Airplay compatible (yet was able to using Sonos 1). Not really feeling the benefit of S2 right now.

Doesn’t make any sense, AirPlay 2 has no relationship to OS, it’s the capability/electronics built in to the hardware of the speakers. To get it to ‘work’ across speakers that don’t have that hardware, you’d just need to group them with the speakers that you’re targeting as an AirPlay 2 target.

I am doing more testing today to validate this. It was never an issue on Sonos 1 controller.

I’d certainly be interested if you find any discrepancies. AirPlay 2 is hardware related, not software related. I suspect Sonos Support would be interested as well.
