I have an S1 system that I’d like to keep as S1 (x2 Play 1’s and a Connect) I now need a PlayBar and would prefer not to buy secondhand. If the refurbished PlayBar from Sonos ships with S2 then is it possible to revert to S1? Or, does it in fact ship with S1??

If the Playbar was set up on an S2 system, it can be downgraded to S1 by resetting the Playbar.
While we don’t recommend downgrading your products to S1 after updating to S2, it is possible to downgrade cross-compatible products by resetting them and adding them to an existing S1 system.
