next sonos speaker purchase recommendation? Sonos Play 2026 or Era 300?

I have Sonos Era 300 and Roam 2 in my little bedroom. I take Roam 2 when I travel. The new speaker Sonos Play 2026 seems good. I am thinking to buy one more Sonos speaker. Someone said buy another Era 300, but my room is really small though I can still put it in. So now I am really hesitating buy another Era 300 to make pair or buy new Sonos Play? I do have Samsung 11.2 soundbar in my living room. So I don’t need any speaker in living room. I also have 1 Bose portable smart speaker in my bedroom. So currently 3 smart speakers in my bedroom, 2 Sonos and 1 Bose. Plus 1 XiaoMi smart speaker in my ensuite bathroom. Those speakers can play same music via airplay/airplay 2. But only Ear 300 support Dolby Amos. If Sonos Play 2026 support it as well. Then my next speaker purchase definitely is Play. But unfortunately Sonos Play 2026 is not support Dolby atmos. As you know my bedroom is small. So could you please make recommendation buy Era 300 or Play 2026? Many Thanks.

Since the new Play hasn’t been released, it’s hard to know whether or not to recommend it. If you get a second of a same model that you already have, you can set up a stereo pair, something that pleases my ears and listening style. Seems hard to believe either choice is a bad one, but you’re going to have to choose yourself.

PLAY is larger than ROAM so I expect that it will have more Bass and better deal with larger spaces. Of course the down side is that PLAY is larger in the suitcase. ROAM can fit in a large pocket.

I also would prefer a stereo bedroom.

I have two Era 300s Paired in a 10x10 foot room and the Atmos sound is amazing.

Someone From Sonos suggest Sonos Play + Sonos Port. He said The Port is designed specifically to bring your existing 3rd-party audio equipment into the Sonos ecosystem. By connecting it to my non-Sonos speakers (Bose and XiaoMi) you can stream all your favorite music through them while keeping everything perfectly in sync with your Era 300 and Roam.

Any speaker that supports Airplay 2 can be linked together. The difference with the port is that brings the speaker into the Sonos ecosystem so you can use their app to link them instead. Depends on which you prefer.

I also have a Roam in my bedroom, mainly link with HomePods for late night listening, and use as a shower speaker as well as the occasional outing. I am likely going to replace it with a Play in order to gain stereo and a more pronounced output. Am awaiting reviews, but someone from Sonos  commented that it sounded very close to an Era 100 (just a touch less volume/bass). It will be larger but still portable enough to carry around without too much effort and can fit into a backpack.

I also have a 300 in another room, which fills out the room nicely but there are certain situations when I may take the Play and group it in to have more even sound distribution (also don’t have the room to put in a second 300 there).

Take a look at the chart below. It shows what features you get with the Era 300 and Play. It may help you decide.

The Sonos Play is also stereo.

Two angled tweeters create a crisp and accurate high frequency response and stereo separation.

I hear you. However, I was following the office Sonos speaker comparison against the Roam2. Sonos marketing can’t seem to decide on how to describe the Plays sound regardless of the two angled tweeters. So much conflicting information it really annoys me.

To be honest, i don’t think I need a Sonos Port.  All my smart speaker are support airplay or airplay2. I have played music on all of them without issue.
I wish Sonos Play Add Dolby Atoms like Era 300. Then I won’t feel difficult to choose between Era 300 and Play. Right now, no Dolby Atoms in any Sonos portable speaker. 🙁

The Era 300 caters to a different audience. The Play (please do not call it Play 2026, there has never been a Sonos Play before) is portable and will be used outside where Atmos will not work - it would only make the Play more expensive. If you ant to use the spaeker inside and you wnat Atmos, choose the Era 300.

Playing Atmos on a speaker with a limited number of drivers, no side or vertical ones, is going to eliminate almost all Atmos impact. Likely not worth the cost to add Atmos.

Thanks for all your comments and advice! I’ve just measured my bedroom, and it’s about 12 square metres with an ensuite bathroom. I’ve got a desk that’s 1.2 metres long, and my Era 300 is on it. If I add one more speaker, I could move my current Era 300 to the left corner of the desk. I’m thinking of getting another Era 300 or a Play, which will be released at the end of this month. I could also consider JBL Authentics 500. Since all my speakers are smart speakers, they can play music via AirPlay or AirPlay 2, including the XiaoMi speaker in my bathroom. Right now, I often listen to music on the three bedroom speakers (Era 300, Roam 2 and a probable Smart speaker) or the fourth bedroom speakers ( XiaoMi speaker in bathroom ) at the same time via AirPlay/AirPlay 2 from my iPhone. So I don’t think I need a Sonos Port. With all these details, do you have any suggestions for my next speakers? Another speaker with Dolby Atoms? Then another Era 300 would be the best option. Otherwise, I could wait for the Play release and then visit a local store to listen before making a decision. 😊
