Question

turntable and beam 2

Hello i am new to the sonos world.

i just bought a beam 2. I would now like to purchase a turntable that can be connected to the beam 2. I have read some treads but I am not very clear yet. I guess the Pro-Ject T1 Phono SB turntable is fully integrable with the beam 2, or is it?
Can I connect only with the RCA cable or is it better with the line-in adapter cable?
I assume that the beam 2 then automatically activates if the audio pulse comes from the TV or the turntable, is that correct?

thank you very much

No it’s not correct, you need either a turntable (with pre-amp integrated, or external pre-amp) and line-out to connect to a Sonos product that has a line-in port. Or you can use a Turntable with a Bluetooth connection to connect to a Sonos product that has a Bluetooth receiver, or you can use a Turntable which supports a direct connection to Sonos i.e. Victrola Stream.

See below to use a Sonos product that has a line-in port or Bluetooth Receiver (Rx) as follows…

  • Port/Connect (no BT Rx)
  • Amp/Connect:Amp (no BT Rx)**
  • Five/Play:5 (gen2) (no BT Rx)**
  • Era-100 (has BT Rx) (requires additional dongle)**
  • Era-300 (has BT Rx) (requires additional dongle)**
  • Sonos Move 2 (has BT Rx) (requires additional dongle)
  • Sonos Roam/2/SL - has no line-in, but has BT Rx only

** Note: If any of the above compatible devices are used as a HT Surround, then their line-in port and Bluetooth Rx both become disabled.

Once the TT is connected it can play to any/all Sonos products - a line-in connection is the recommended/preferred option.

Here are links to the two Sonos adapters that are currently available to use (if required):

This next link is also worth reading as it supplies a lot of good information about using a Turntable with Sonos speakers…

Hi Ken,  thank you, your answer was very detailed.
So the only way to get the soundbar to talk to each other would be to get an extra product that acts as an interface between the turntable and the soundbar.
maybe, then it would be better to get a Victrola Stream directly..too bad though, I wanted to have everything in the same family....
thanks for the help

I use a Victrola and it connects to my sonos system without having to use the line-out connection. EASY set-up and works great.

I had another turntable that Sonos sells on their website, and I needed to use the line-out. It worked good and set up was easy but the Victrola is better (in my opinion) and I do not have to use the line-out connection.

I Have a Beam 2, a pair of Sonos One’s gen 2, a pair of Sonos Era 100s, a Sonos Mini Sub, as well as a Sonos amp which connects an active B&W subwoofer, a pair of passive Polk speakers, and my wonderful Fluance RT85 turntable.  My amp/turntable stereo system is in a separate room from my Beam theater system

Although I can send my vinyl through to my Beam 2 and Sonos speakers/sub I seldom bother.  The sound quality doesn’t come close to my turntable/amp/passive speaker system,

But most important, Sonos has so-ruined its wireless software that I wouldn't spend another penny on Sonos until they repair their app and show more respect for their existing, trapped customer base.  If I had it to do over again, I’d skip the Sonos amp for stereo turntable use and buy a traditional amp and preamp, since the Sonos amp is only mediocre when used to send turntable-based music to its Beam and speakers.

@klrmlr  thank you  for your contribution.
so you confirm that with this turntable the connection is easy. how is the sound quality?

@barcode i am not at your level. you have a system that does not represent the average. i am really a beginner. you say that the sound transmitted wirelessly by a turntable like the one suggested above is not at a good level?

thank you

This was a very easy set up. The turn table came with it’s own app that connected to SONO’s. When I plugged in the turntable, it’s app found it right away and noticed I had SONOS and asked to join. I said yes Once it connected to my system (I have an Arc, Two Era 300’s, Two Ones (gen 2), an Era 100, Sub Mini, two Roams and a Move 2) I have not needed the Victrola app. The sound is great (I’m not a ‘pro’ like a lot of people on these blogs) to me. I listen to my albums all the time. I really do not have any complaints about the Victrola turn table. Very pleased. Like a lot of other SONOS users, i’m more upset at SONOS for their app change and their disregard for their customers. BUT, I love my speakers and am hopeful that they will fix the app and bring back all the cool features they had before. But The app change did not impact my turntable function so I’m happy.

I am brand new to the sonos world so unfortunately I don't know the positive aspects it had before and has now lost.
also when it comes to audio quality i admit i am an average user who doesn't have great demands and skills.
Also like barcode you have a great system. i will take this turntable. thank you!

I hope I didn’t discourage you with my earlier comment.   The Sonos is a very easy setup; my Beam/Sonos1s/minisub constitute a home theater setup that I am very pleased with.  My Era 100s sit in a separate office room and play well when I stream from my desktop iTunes library.

My qualm is with my stereo system (Sonos Amp/Fluance TT/B&W sub/Polk speakers.  The physical setup was quite easy.  I bought the Sonos Amp thinking it would integrate my TT stereo system to my other Sonos equipment.  It does, but the Beam/Sonos Mini Sub sound disappoints me to the point that I seldom stream vinyl music to it.  So my Sonos amp really wasn’t necessary for me.  I don’t think of myself as an expert at all, but as a consumer the $700 I spent on the Sonos amp could have gone to many other amp/receiver alternatives since I am essentially using my stereo TT as a standalone.  Mostly I am irritated at Sonos for botching its app update so badly.  Their equipment is expensive and should not be hampered by the application software.  I wish they had an old-fashioned remote control for the amp.  I guess I’m old school in that respect.  The broken app is like having a nice door but no key to unlock it.

Hi barcode, absolutly not. I am aware that I am at a very low level compared to you and I have far fewer demands. I understand your point of view and irritation towards sonos behavior

many thanks
