Question

Sonos Port + Turntable + Surround

Hi,

My current setup is as follows

2 Built-in speakers connected to an AMP --- “BEDROOM”

1 Sonos ARC used as soundbar on TV + 2 ERA 100 that are grouped as SURROUND--- “LIVING ROOM”

I also have a turntable with audio out. I connected it to one of my ERA 100’s and it plays beautifully, however, it appears I have to turn my surround pairing (ERAS 100 speakers) to allow for a Line-IN. It appears as if I can get a PORT to plug into turntable and can leave the ARC/ERA100/ERA100 surround grouping.

If I do this - can I still play music through the “Surround” system via Line-IN on the PORT or do ALL line-in connections get disabled once these 3 speakers are grouped into a TV Surround System? Or is it just the Line-IN speakers on the surround speakers that gets disabled?

Just need to know if adding PORT will solve my problem here. I want to be able to use the ERA 100/ARC speakers as both music (Spotify/Turntable) as well as a TV Surround System.

I’d also like to be able to play music from Turntable (connected through PORT) into the other “ bedroom” group - connected through my AMP.

Thank you

Yes. The port will be the perfect device for your turntable.

You can select the living room as the default room for audio if you like and also have the line in on the port as the default input.

First of all, thank you for your reply!

Is there any reason to use PORT instead of a Gen 2 CONNECT - I am reading that the newer CONNECTS are compatible with the New App and can be added to my system.  Seeing them used for a lot cheaper than a PORT

The only reason for me would be the connect not being compatible in the near future. But Sonos has supported devices for many years.

I have a connect S15 in my setup that works flawlessly. If you can find one at a good price I would say get it.

There are no “newer” Connects. They were discontinued with the introduction of the Port. The only Connects available are used or maybe refurbished by Sonos.

Don’t believe all the negative comments in the community. Yes the App does have issues but not nearly as bad as some disgruntled posters would have you believe. I’ll probably get a lot of negative responses after that comment. I really don’t care as the app even with its shortcomings works fine for me. Most are missing features and the rest are most likely due to network problems. Oops l’m really gonna get it now 😂.

To your question…you can’t use a line-in to any Sonos speaker being used as a surround. The only option is to use another line-in speaker. Another Era 100 is less expensive than a Port. In fact two Era 100’s used as stereo pair aren’t two much more than a Port. Two Era100’s also give you a dedicated set of speakers for the Turntable.

However, a Port is an option. You may or may not like the sound stage for turntable music being sent to your home theater if you are a stickler for two channel stereo separation.

I am not a sound quality “stickler” - I have maybe 100 records that were my moms that my dad gave me after she died that I like to put on fro time to time. But the majority of the time I just use Spotify.

By “Newer” Connect it appears that ones made after a certain date are compatible with S2 (or S1) and ones before a certain date are NOT compatible with the new software. Many of the used listings will tell you.

Are there any audio quality difference between a Connect (S2 Compatible) and a Port - all things equal….I have a Fluance turntable w/ built in pre-amp - nothing super fancy but gets the job done.

In terms of using a pair of Era 100 for turntable - I already have the two ERA 100 next to the turntable and the table behind the TV would look a bit ridiculous with 4 of them on it. I think ill just take my chances with a used G2 Connect and if they discontinue it, so be it.

The sound quality would be the same with a Port or Connect.
