Hi!

I hope someone can help me with their own experience or knowledge.

I’m already using Sonos in two different configurations :

  • A pair of stereo Play:1 in one room,
  • A home cinema with a Ray and two Era 100 in another.
  • I control them both with the Sonos App.

I want to play my vinyl records on the Sonos speakers, using a Sonos Port (I’ve already got a vinyl turntable and a Pioneer amp), and I still want to be sure of two things before I buy the Port.

My questions are :

  • When I want to switch from the home cinema setup to the Port playing the vinyls, will it be smooth enough, I mean without having to redo my home cinema setup every time ?
  • Does the Sonos Port allow me to broadcast the vinyl music to all my system, including the pair of Play:1 and the pair of Era 100 ?

If the Turntable has a built-in pre-amp you could connect that direct to your Sonos Port - just set it to line-out. If not then you need to link it to the phono-in on your Pioneer and then connect an analog line-out to the port instead. 

In the Sonos App the Port/TT line in will appear as a ‘music source’ (line-in icon) in your Browse/Music Services tab and that source can be played to your Home Theatre (Ray/Era) setup and/or your stereo pair of Play:1’s - you don’t have to reconfigure anything.. there are settings in the Port room in the ‘Settings/System’ tab to autoplay the line-in audio to either, or both, your Sonos rooms at a preset volume level too.

Did you think about using a cheaper Era100 with line in adapter for this instead of using a port just as a line in? Or are you planning to also use the ports line out function?

Thanks a lot for your answer. As my turntable doesn’t have a pre-amp, I was about to connect the analog line-out to the Port. I’ll check out the settings of the Port to configure it on the speakers whenever I want it with the presets you mentioned.

Hi Schlumpf,

I wasn’t planning to use the line out function of the Port for now, just use the pair of Era100 I already have in this room (but not close enough), and the other pair of Play:1 in the other room. One or two more Era100 would be...indecent ! 😄 (and to have a better stereo sound I would buy two, so it wouldn’t be cheaper in the end...if only possible to split the line out of my amp in two jack line in, I didn't check yet).

And the line out port might be useful in the future, for both wireless broadcasting and recording purpose on another device in the same time, for example.

Just swap the Era 100s and your Play 1s. 

The Play 1s are adequate surrounds for the Ray and the 100s will sound better for Stereo music and give you the option (as they would not be surrounds) to add the cheap line-in dongle instead of the more expensive Port.
