Pro-Ject X1 B > Phono Box > Sonos Port: Low Volume, Heavy Static

I am a vinyl newbie, and my wife recently bought us a Pro-Ject X1 B and a Phono Box preamp.  We have these hooked into the Sonos Port.  Our Sonos system includes a Gen1 Play 1, Gen1 Play 5 and a Gen2 Sonos Beam.  We have the Port setup as our “Lounge” and the volume settings as follows: Bass 0, Treble +6, Balance 0, Loudness On, Volume Limit Off, Source Level 4 (tried everything up through 10).

The sound from the turntable is super low and has heavy static.  I feel like I am missing something simple here.  The turntable does not have a built-in preamp so there is no Line Out/Phono Out switch.  Can someone help?  Also curious if Gen2 speakers and/or a sub would make a difference.  Much appreciated!

Thanks,
Chris

Low volume and static are symptom of a turntable working without a preamp or the preamp not being turned on. Can you tell us how the turntable and preamp are connected to the Port?

Hi - If your turntable is plugged into the Port then it sounds like you are missing power. Effectively you have 2 pre amps.

You could swap the Port for an amp, or if you don’t want to go to that expense you could buy a second separates amp of Ebay, try that between the Port and the Speakers. If it works then you know it is just about finding an amp set up to suit you. And you can sell the amp again on ebay if you decide it isn’t something you want to keep.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info.  If I swap out the Sonos Port for the Sonos Amp, will that connect wirelessly to my 3 Sonos Speakers?

If the turntable doesn’t have a built-in preamp, then you are going to need an external phono preamp.  Without a preamp, a turntable phono output into a line-in level input will sound horrible.

@jgatie I have the Pro-ject Phono Box preamp included in the setup.

Yes.
That is a clean solution. If you then play your turntable into the Amp, it will show as the Line In in your services list.

if you then go to the services list in any of the other rooms in the app, you can select Line In and your turntable will play in those rooms. You can just group rooms as normal to play the turntable in the other rooms. You can do the same with any other source you plug into the amp too.

I’m stream most of my music. But I love collecting vinyl that is visually interesting - signed, coloured etc.. and then enjoying that on the Project Turntable from Sonos. I play it through an Amp to some Linn Majik 109’s. Streamed music through that set up sounds cleaner and more powerful, but the vinyl has more atmosphere and sounds like, well, vinyl.

hope you get it sorted. 👍

@106rallye I just pressed the MM/MC button (it was on MC, now it is MM) and increased the Sonos Source Level from 4 to 10 (max) and it sounds MUCH better.

As a newb, what does MM/MC mean in relation to my setup?  THANK YOU.

UPDATE:  I see that my turntable has an MM cartridge… hence, selecting MM makes the difference.  So simple.
