Question

Old Technics SL-1900 with Sonos Port - very low volume

Hi - I’m a complete newbie on this - so please be kind 😆

i’ve inheritied a Technics SL-1900 turntable (probably from the 90’s) and also have a Pioneer AMP (also from 90’s).

I was advised by a very competent (i think) hifi expert to buy the Sonos Port and connect my Turntable into the IN plugs, and then connect my Port to the Amp from the OUT to the AUX IN ports.

When i have this setup, the volume output through my SONOS speakers is the equivalent to Volume 8, even when its on 100%.

Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Does the turntable need to go through the AMP? It seems to make no difference at all to the volume output whether its connected or not.

Am going slightly bonkers. Any help welcome.

More than likely a pre-amp problem.  To convert regular phono output to the line-level input on Sonos, you need what is called a “phono pre-amp”.  These can be built into the turntable and activated by a switch or they can be external.  If your turntable doesn’t have one, you will need to buy an external phono pre-amp (around $20 on Amazon).

PS - I looked up that model and it doesn’t have a built-in preamp.  So that would be your problem, and an external pre-amp should fix it.

Thanks @jgatie - so does the ideal connection go: Turntable/PhonePreAmp/SONOS Port :: SONOS speakers?

Do i need the Technics separate AMP for anything?

Yes. That will be the way to connect the turntable.

If you do not intend to have audio come through the Pioneer amp into passive speakers, you do not need it. Having the port play through your Sonos speakers is fine. You can also setup the Port to auto play to a specific room.

Yes.  You could use the analog or digital outputs on the Port to feed the Techniques amp if you wished to include that as a Sonos source. You would need to connect the amp to passive speakers, though.

If your Pioneer amp has a phono input, you do not need a separate phone pre-amp — it will be built in to the Pioneer amp. The connection would be turntable > Pioneer amp > Sonos Port. The particular output from the Pioneer will depend on the specific model you have.

A separate phono pre-amp will take up less space than the Pioneer so you may want to go that route anyway, but not required if you have that phono input. Also if you think you might ever want to add another source like a CD player or cassette deck, the amp could be used for switching between those sources.
