EQ not working with Sonos Home Theatre or Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO Turntable

.: Greetings, all. Last year in 2024 I purchased a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO turntable. With help from many on this forum, I was able to buy a Sonos Port pre-amp, and all was well with the new product. I could easily switch between the LG tv and the Pro-Ject turntable.

A couple of days ago, I decided I wanted to change some of the EQ settings for the sound for the turntable. I discovered that changing the Bass, Treble, and Balance Control Settings does not make any difference, nor does the Loudness option.

I have no idea how to correct this function. The rest of my Sonos speakers (Arc SL, two One SL’s) are working fine.

If anyone has any advise on how to correct the currently non-functional EQ controls on my Sonos App, please let me know. Thank you in advance for your assistant and guidance.

Did you find what you were looking for?

May I ask why you didn't go with the Victoria Carbon instead??

Are you changing the tone controls on the Port or the speakers you want to listen to?
If it’s the Port than those EQ changes effect the output RCA’s of the Port. I made this mistake early on.

Of course. It was recommended to me by the manager of my city’s high end audio business. I wanted a simple, uncomplicated turntable, and the Debut Carbon fit the bill. I’m not an audiophile, I just wanted to listen to some of my albums that have been gathering dust for too long.

Hello, tnprime. I’m not sure I know what you mean. I am using the Sonos App, which is up-to-date. Then I go to Settings (in the upper-right corner), I click on “Pro-Ject Turntable.” and then click on EQ. On the screen below, no matter where I slide the settings for Bass, Treble, or Balance, nothing changes. Setting to “Loudness” also makes no difference.

I don’t think I’m doing anything with the Sonos Port. When I expand “Port” in the app, it shows me the Network Status and Serial Number only.

Please advise, thank you.

@Podbay

Maybe see if setting the line-out level in the Sonos App to ‘fixed’ just temporarily …and then switching it back to ‘variable’ will go onto resolve the EQ issue for you🤔?

See attached screenshot, just as an example.

If you are listening to the turntable through the ARC, adjust the ARC’s tone controls.

.: Hello, Ken, and thank you for your suggestion. I was unable to locate the “Line-Out Level” screen on my Sonos app. My Pro-Ject turntable is connected to the Inputs on the Pro-Ject Phono Box MM Pre-Amp. The Output cables go to the Inputs on the Sonos Port. From there, the Sonos Port connects to the Arc and One SL speakers via Bluetooth. So I’m not sure what to do from this point forward. If you can, please advise further. Thank you kindly.

In the Sonos App goto ‘Settings’ (gear icon top right of screen) and scroll the page until you see the Sonos Port room - select that and scroll page to the ‘Line Out’ category and select the ‘Line Out Level’ to access the settings and page shown in the screenshot I posted earlier - then try changing the settings mentioned.

The line-out EQ settings will become available in the ‘Settings/Port’ ‘room’ area too when the line-out level is set to ‘variable’. See attached.

Hello, buzz. Thank you for responding. Can you tell me how to to do that? I can’t find any reference to “tone control” for the Arc Unit in the online manual. Thank you.

Hello again, Ken. I don’t have a “Sonos Port” Room labeled as such; I have a room called “Pro-Ject Turntable” that includes “Products,” which is where “Port” appears. But I was able to locate the “Line Out” category, and the “Line-Out Level” section. It was already on “Variable,” so I switched it to “Fixed” and left it there briefly before switching back to “Variable.” It didn’t make any difference. The Bass, Treble, and Balance remain the same. 😑 I’m not sure what to do next. I sincerely appreciate your time and help, however.

Is anything connected to PORT’s Line-Out? PORT’s Volume and tone controls only adjust PORT’s Line-Out.

If you are listening through ARC, you should use ARC’s Volume and tone controls.

Hello, buzz. There is nothing connected to Port’s Line-Out. The cables into Line-In come from the Pro-Ject Pre-Amp.

Then, as was said before, you need to control the tones on the device you are playing to, not on the Port.

Just to make you understand the Sonos system better: Sonos devices communicate via WiFi, not bluetooth as you seem to think.

Hello, 106rallye. Thank you for your response. I now realize that it’s Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth. So my turntable, via Sonos Port (and the pre-amp) is playing to my Sonos Arc/One SL “room.” From there, I’m not sure how to control the tones on the Arc/One SL room. I must be missing something very straightforward.

Sorry, I misunderstood and thought you were using a Bluetooth transmitter as your Port output - but anyhow, as @buzz mentioned, you control the EQ by going to the EQ settings of the Sonos ‘room’ or ‘rooms’ that you are playing the TT audio to. So if playing to your Sonos Arc, for example, then goto the Sonos App ‘settings’ (gear icon top right) and select the Arc room in your system list and then simply adjust the EQ controls in there.

If you want the ‘Full’ TT music audio playback to any Arc surround speakers aswell, then switch the music playback setting from ‘Ambient’ to ‘Full’ in its surround audio settings aswell and perhaps then adjust the EQ.

Hope that assists.

Hello again, Ken. I’ll need to study your directions later this afternoon. I think I’ve mucked around with my Sonos app to the point where the TT is now playing through the same Line-In as the LG TV. I may need to delete the TT from my Sonos system and try re-adding it again. I’ll report back later. Again, many thanks for taking the time to help me with your guidance.

Don’t delete the turntable. If you are able to play the turntable through the ARC, the turntable is is connected to PORT.’s Line-In. The PORT Line-In is simply a resource on the network that can be played in any combination of SONOS “Rooms”. All you need to do is pull up the Room you want to play the turntable in and select PORT’s Line-In as the source. You probably indicated that the Line-In’s name should be “Turntable”, but this is arbitrary because PORT has no idea that the Line-In device is a turntable. You could just as easily named it “black thing”.
