Connect turntable to 10 Year Old System

Hi,

I have a 10 year old system with two 5.1 surround sound systems as well as play 1, play 3 and a play 5 all meshed with a boost.

I am looking to connect a turntable with a preamp to the system and I'm looking for advice on how to go about this.

Thanks

The information below covers all types of turntable. Those using a Sonos line-in, Bluetooth, or a ‘Works with Sonos’ over wireless Turntable … hopefully it will provide the answer you’re looking for….

You will need to use a Sonos product that either has a line-in port, or if the TT has a Bluetooth transmitter, then there are Sonos products with a Bluetooth Receiver (Rx) as indicated in the below list…

  • Port/Connect (no BT Rx)
  • Amp/Connect:Amp (no BT Rx)**
  • Five/Play:5 (gen2) (no BT Rx)**
  • Era-100 (has BT Rx) (requires additional dongle)**
  • Era-300 (has BT Rx) (requires additional dongle)**
  • Sonos Move 2 (has BT Rx) (requires additional dongle)
  • Sonos Roam/2/SL - has no line-in, but has BT Rx only

** Note: If any of the above compatible devices are used as a Sonos Home Theatre Surround, then their line-in port and Bluetooth Rx both become disabled.

Once the TT is connected it can play to any/all Sonos products - a line-in connection is the recommended/preferred option.

Here are links to the two Sonos adapters that are currently available to use (if required):

This next link below is also worth reading as it supplies a lot of good information about using a Turntable with Sonos speakers…

There is also the option to use a TT with a direct ‘Works with Sonos’ connection to Sonos speakers. Eg: Victrola Stream Turntable. See link:

Thanks for the info. This has given me plenty to think about.

I like the Victorola TT's. Can you confirm if they will work with the Sonos 1 app.

I am not sure if all the newer tech is backward compatible.

I can’t confirm this myself, as I don’t own one, but the Victrola site says they are compatible… see below:

If you must stay with the S1 app because of older devices, you can use a Play 5 to connect the TT to the system. The Play 5 has a 3.5 mm line input, so you will need a RCA to 3.5 mm adapter to accomplish this.

The play 5 is an other room well away from where the TT will be unfortunately.

The Victorola seems like a good solution.

I can also use the connect as well I guess.

Thanks for the help guys

Hi there is there any option to connect the turntable to an older system using a Gen 2 Sonos Connect or Connect Amp? Like Jostra I have several speakers and none are near where the turntable will reside. The turntable I am thinking of has a pre-amp as well if that makes any difference?

My proposed setup I was thinking of was:

  • TT RCA output connector into RCA input of Connect
  • Set up the Connect on the SONOS app
  • Play the input from TT through the Sonos app

I believe somewhere I have missed the point of the Connect as I believe I need to have some external amp or speakers connected to the Connect in order to play anything? Is that right? Even if I wanted to play them on the Sonos speakers??

The Connect provides line level in and out as well as digital out. You could connect a speaker but you'd likely be unable to hear it, for that you would need a Connect Amp.

A turntable, with a preamp can connect to a Connect with no issues. Once connected you could play to any or all of your Sonos.

Thanks Stanley_4 - having got rid of all my old school speakers/stands and Harmon Kardon amp, I was hoping to just continue to use the Sonos speakers I already have and not have to purchase a Play 5 or a newer speaker with line-in.

I’ll get back to my hunt for a second hand Connect!

Do you suppose I could also use a Connect Amp as well but just not connect it to any speakers? I’ve seen a few 2nd hand ones of those too going cheap and although I wouldn’t be using their full potential could that still do the trick?

I think they would work, just be a bit more power use.

Thank you - yes from the link looks just as straight forward. And with the Connect amp if we ever want to connect other speakers to it we could!!

I’m finding many more s2 connect amps available thank the s2 connects - and price wise much more affordable.

Just check the S2 compatibility carefully so you don't get an S1 only one.

OK, I’ve read through this discussion and just want to confirm I’m interpreting all correctly (and apologize for asking again):  I have 3 Play:1 speakers on my WiFi network and I’m running the S2 Controller.  I was given a Sony PS-LX310BT bluetooth enabled turntable and want to connect it to the Sonos system.  If I add an Era 100 speaker, which is BT enabled, can I pair the turntable with that speaker and also play on the 3 Play:1 speakers on my network?  Or does anyone know if there is another BT enabled connection device that could plug into the Ethernet port on one of the Play:1 speakers that I could pair with the turntable?  Thanks so much

The Ethernet port is Ethernet only, so no.

The 100 should connect to the turntable using Bluetooth but you’d likely get better stability and sound using the line-in adapter (see in store) and either way would Group with any other Sonos.
