arc ultra vs beam + (2) ones paired in front

Forum|alt.badge.img

I have a large room (26’ x 26’) with couch in middle of room facing tv. Current setup is beam soundbar paired with (2) sonos ones as surround and also (2) sonos ones beside the beam facing the listener. The (2) ones adjacent the beam soundbar are paired and make a considerable difference when watching movies.

Current Large Room (26’ x 26’):

  • Beam Soundbar
  • (2) Adjacent Sonos Ones facing listener
  • (2) Sonos Ones paired with Beam as Surround

I am debating purchasing an Arc Ultra and moving the beam and (2) adjacent ones to a smaller room to make (2) surround sound tv setups. Two room setup would then look like this:

Large Room (26’ x 26’):

  • Arc Ultra
  • (2) One’s paired as surround

Small Room:

  • Beam
  • (2) Ones paired as surround

I am concerned that the Arc Ultra as stand-alone with (2) Ones as surround will not be as powerful as the current setup. I know I could also buy (2) Era 300’s but I’m not interested in spending that much currently. Thoughts?

Did you find what you were looking for?

I don’t think you’d need worry. The Arc ultra will be sufficient and has the bass driver too adding some bass kick.

@Cibearse

With all due respect I must set the record straight as you are using Sonos terms out of context which may lead others to think your current setup is correct.

First of all you do not have a Beam Paired with four (4) Sonos Ones (i.e. two front and two rears as surrounds). What you have (in proper Sonos configuration) is:

  • Beam Bonded with Sonos One x 2 as surrounds
  • Sonos Ones x 2 (in stereo pair) Grouped to the Beam...one on either side

I know for a fact that Grouping Sonos One’s to the Beam are causing a 75ms delay resulting in an echo effect when watching movies. Maybe (to your ears) you think that’s normal audio behavior; but it’s not. Granted you will not experience any delay (or echo effect) when listening to music.

The setup you are contemplating is (in proper Sonos context) is:

Large Room (26’ x 26’):

  • Arc Ultra
  • (2) One’s Bonded as surround

Small Room:

  • Beam
  • (2) Ones Bonded as surround

The term Paired is only used when creating a stereo pair using two identical Sonos speakers. As stated by @bockersjv the Arc Ultra will be sufficient and has a bass driver to add low-end kick.

@AjTrek1 Sonos Arc Ultra at $1000 or Sonos Arc at $650?

keep in mind the room is 26x26 and will be paired with (2) sonos one’s.

edit: they will be “bonded”.

I dread the next term or speaker name Sonos marketing pulls out of their… ummm… armpit.

The least they could do is have a nice “Sonos terms” definitions section in the FAQ.

I still miss the good old days when we had Sonos Zones that you put in rooms of your house.

@Cibearse

The Arc or Arc Ultra is OK for room size as long as the seating area is midway from the TV screen. The reasoning is that the Arc Ultra and Arc will create a  “Bubble” with the surrounds positioned to left and right of seating area and no more than 3 feet (1 meter) behind.

Now…I can tell from personal experience that the Arc Ultra is superior to the Arc. So if budget is not an issue then go with the Arc Ultra.

Another option is to spend the funds saved by purchasing the Arc to get a pair of Era 100’s or the Era 300’s for a more immersive experience with Dolby Atmos.

The best experience is to go with Arc Ultra and Era 300’s (or the Arc as the budget saver).

If budget allows I’d consider adding a Sub 4 to any combination whether you stick with the Sonos One’s or upgrade to Era 100’s or splurge with Era 300’s.

Below is current setup. Roughly 10’ away from TV with sonos Ones behind couch. I previously had the ones in corners of back wall and just went +5 to surround sound then recently got these stands.

Very nice room…I’m jealous 😊

However I believe the stands are the way to go. The Arc Ultra or Arc will improve your experience vs the Beam.  As your floor appears to be carpeted the Arc Ultra or Arc will be a nice upgrade to counteract the sound absorption of the plushness.

Thanks, I’ve been given 100% autonomy to decorate this room as I see fit. Hence the below picture.

Arc Ultra on a wall mount under the TV, Era-300 surrounds on stands and at least one Sub 4 tucked into the corner between the TV and fireplace or possibly two Sub 4s sitting behind the couch.

I see you like the big “B”. Great choice. 😊 If you can find it try some “1792”. 👍

That’s what got me into bourbon. Back when it was called “1792 Ridgemont Reserve”.

So have you decided on your Sonos configuration components?

Probably going to upgrade to the Ultra for now. Maybe get the era 300’s sometime down the road. Likely next black friday or big sale.

Do you have any older Sonos that are eligible for the 30% upgrade discount? You can get a pair of 300s for one discount.

Also any other Sonos package deal only uses one discount.

I would experiment with using your extra pair of Sonos One in that room to support an additional listen area.  Maybe behind the bar, table, or billards table?  This appears to be a multiuse space with multiple areas where you might want to optimize the audio.   I would not use that extra pair for TV audio, but for music, you may find it helps fill up the room better.

Yes, and it is quite handy BUT it doesn't show up in the support pages search.

https://support.sonos.com/en-us/search?q=Terminology+

It does in the Community though, Search the Community for Bond and you get 11267 posts, it being the 16th.

Look for Pair and it isn't in the top 100.

Bond under Learn? Nope, you get Amp binding posts.

It should show up everywhere (Community, Learn and Support) and in the top 10 results as it has basic, necessary information to understand many of the other search results.

Hi @Stanley_4

Ah fair.

It does show here: https://en.community.sonos.com/tutorials-and-how-to-s-229149

I have asked for it to feature at the top the Controllers section - it looks a bit empty there anyway.
