Arc always wants to take control of whole house

I’m going insane

I have an Arc, Sub and two Fives for surround

3 Ports

1 standalone Five

Arc always works fine (Apple TV and never use the app on it).

when I want to play music any where else Arc wants to be a Master or something. Arc will always play music even though I rarely want it to with the app.

If I add or switch to another speaker it reverts back.

It’s a constant cat and mouse game to get what I want playing. Often involving unplugging the entire HT setup. Now even that is not working and showing up.

I think I have to reboot everything with HT unplugged to get the other speakers to play.

I just went through and made sure everything was on the same WiFi. I have 2.4ghz and 5.0 as separate SSID. I made sure everything including phone was on 2.4ghz.

What the F am I doing wrong.

Starting to regret investing in Sonos.

This is all bought in the last year or so.

I think I got it working for the moment (again)

I powered everything off until Sonos said nothing found. No matter what, if anything was powered on it would say Arc was there when it was powered off (including sub and surrounds). It’s like it shares state with all devices on the network (but that was stale). But if I turned anything else off they would almost immediately drop from the app.

then I powered on 1 port and my single Five.

I could get each to play, but not together.

Then I did a check updates and it found an update for all the ports.

Now everything works as expected.

I did have automatic updates enabled and had reinstalled the app.  Nothing reported a pending update. Where it has in the past.

This is like the 5th time updates between devices seemed to be out of sync. It’s as if, if they are not on the same exact release they won’t work with one another at all.

I might turn off auto updates now that I have it working again. I generally like to be on the latest but this insane.

Make sure as shown in Picture 1

  • You don’t have a “Group” setup (that includes the Arc) wherein “Test Group” in my example would be the one in your setup with your Arc.  Nor is “Everywhere” hi-lighted.

Make sure as shown in Picture 2

  • You have “Ungroup on Autoplay” turned on

Are you using the Apple TV app or Apple TV device on the TV?  How are you playing the music?

There’s something else going on with your Sonos that you have not uncovered. The steps that you went through to get things working indicate a deeper issue(s). Sonos should always be on and not unplugged.

When your system goes out of sync or you have the same issue as in your original post I suggest you run a diagnostic, make note of the reference ID number and then call Sonos support.

It was the Port firmware. System is night and day better than it was.

I had powered everything down, rebooted routers etc. Ports would not play with Fives or Arc. Fives would play with Arc  and ports with ports. But ports with Fives or Arc would error out every time.

After firmware update, the exact same sequence it works solid now. I can power up anything in any order and now it works in and start up any sequence.

But why not just leave the system on and have Sonos take care of the updates in the middle of the night?

Because it didn’t. It’s never updated anything on its own. It usually auto detects and prompts. But this time it didn’t.

My Sonos app System Updates screen Automatic Updates button is ON and Overnight is checked in the Scheduled screen.  Does not automatically update.  I rely on this community & Reddit to tell me when updates are available.  I look in the app on occasion as well.

Mine is set to update overnight. It will update within a few days after the update is released.

If the system does not update despite being set to do so, maybe there are connection problems?

Best practice imo is to leave the updates on manual. Sonos updates have had a lot of bugs since the disastrous May 7 release not to mention how badly they misrepresented the state of the initial release. Update after you have confirmed it’s safe to do so on Reddit or here.

There are no connection problems here.  Sonos devices remain connected 24/7.  All firmware updates conclude successfully.  Maybe I find out about the firmware updates before they are executed automatically.

With the app updates I have to look in the App Store for the latest update as it seems to take some time before they are shown as an app that needs updating.
