playbar & 2 symfonisk bookshelf speakers airplay 2 & surround speakers

Here’s my setup:

Playbar

2 symfonisk speakers

Apple TV & projector

I’m running a projector in my living room and have it connected to an Apple TV. I’m using the symfonisk to stream airplay 2 to my playbar. I’d love to use the symfonisk speakers as surrounds to the left and that right, but when I do that I lose the ability to connect them to the playbar. Anyone have any ideas of how to make that work? Or something easy to add to the system to make it work?

Hi @bendsley912

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Please note that AirPlay does not support the use of surround sound audio, therefore there is no point in having surrounds if the only way of getting audio to your Playbar is through AirPlay from another speaker.

Instead, I would personally recommend the use of a HDMI splitter with Audio Extraction and a optical output port. Sonos does not support the use of HDMI splitters, but I think this is the only way you will get surround sound.

I hope this helps.

In the Sonos world, a dedicated one-way connection between soundbar and surrounds is created, and hence the surrounds can’t then be used for Airplay, Bluetooth etc (depending on the speakers’ basic standalone capabilities) input.
Get a pre-owned pair of speakers for surrounds duty - Play:1’s are good value. Keep the Symfonisk and carry on using them as you are now.

Thanks. That’s what I thought, too. I’ll look at getting a pair of 1s. Could I still use the symfonisks to make the AirPlay connection to the playbar and then the surrounds would be connected to it?

Yup; group both the rooms, or use the Airplay input to play to the Playbar.
