Add Sonos Speakers to existing Home Theatre

Hi,

I want to add some Sonos ONE or PLAY:1 speakers as rear speakers to an existing Home Theatre system and possibly a PLAYBAR as the centre speaker. I already have a Onkyo Amplifer with Floor Speakers and Subwoofer so I just need to know what, if anything I need to purchase to facilitate the above and how best to configure it.

 

At first I thought I would need a SONOS AMP and run an audio output from the Onkyo to Sonos AMP but what I have read so far has just confused me. If anyone could let me know how best to set this up, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If you can find a Playbar on the used market you will find it contains left/right/center speakers so it isn’t suitable for what you asked for. The Current Arc, Beam and Ray are similar.

For TV use you’d need to hook a Sonos Amp to the tv’s HDMI output and your speakers to it. Trying to run the Amp downstream of your AVR will result in delay in the sound and an echo most folks don’t care for.

Either use passive rear speakers with your current setup or…

Get an Amp and Sonos surrounds, you could keep your front R/L and sub.

Get a Sonos sound bar, Arc, Beam or Ray and add a Sonos Sub and surrounds to it.

I already have the Playbar but I don’t have to use it. I have an existing centre speaker I can continue to use.

Sounds like the best and lowest cost option would be to get the AMP and re-use my existing speakers. The main problem I am trying to solve is cabling to the rear speakers however I did want to try and re-use my existing AVR if I could as it is still pretty good.

Over time I would upgrade my front, centre and subwoofer to Sonos speakers but that is not critical at this time.

Amp up front won’t use a center speaker, it reprocesses the audio to create a phantom one instead.

I don’t have a Playbar and can’t find this in the on-line documentation but I think the Amp will connect to your Playbar using the Sonos wireless link so you could stick it in the back of your room with the surrounds.
