Airplay suddenly stopped connecting certain speakers to Sonos

Forum|alt.badge.img

I have a worrying problem here - since yesterday, I have only been able to get sound via Airplay (very important for how I listen to music) in my Hallway (Symfonisk bookshelf), Bedroom (2x Symfonisk lamps),and Sonos Roam. ALL of them are wired via ethernet (except Roam).

My other speakers are Kitchen (2x Play:1), Shower Room (Play:1) and Living Room (Sonos Connect: AMP Gen 2 into stereo).   All Ethernet wired.  I simply cannot get any sound from any of these, but yesterday they were completely fine.  When I connect to Airplay the usual way, the Sonos app displays that there are selected, but there is simply no audio coming through.  Surely an update can’t have killed these older speakers for me in an instant?

When I transmit audio from within the Sonos app itself, every speaker is reached as normal.  However I NEVER use the app - I’m completely dependant on Apple’s music app for local files and playlists.  I need to broadcast via Airplay.  It’s like all three of them have just decided to not work with Airplay overnight.  PLEASE any assistance would be appreciated - all of them worked yesterday, so while I know they are older speakers, they were doing their job as usual and I don’t see how I should be forced to upgrade them overnight.

Did you configure static IPs for your speakers? This should ensure your speakers have the same IP even if you have to restart your router/network.

Just curious as to why you needed to restart your router again?

I have now set the Sonos speakers to static (for the first time ever, admittedly) - so far so good.  Hopefully static means they stay on… thanks for the tips, I’ll be back if I need to!

It might be an ARP cache issue that seems to plague Sonos speakers. If you haven’t set up DHCP reservations for your Sonos boxes, do so, then reboot your router, then speakers. 🤞 it fixes it.

There was also a system update last week I believe that you may need to apply. Go into settings and check for updates.

While I don’t know if your issue is one of the things that happens when Sonos reduces app functionality until an update is applied, but it wouldn’t hurt.

I updated my system yesterday - immediately afterwards I noticed this problem….

Good to know. Have you configured static IPs for all your speakers through your router’s settings?

What is the usual way? Try to Airplay to a single speaker that does work, eg Bedroom, then add another room to group, eg Kitchen 1

Your older speakers are not compatible with direct AirPlay, so you must AirPlay to a supported speaker first, then group a non supported speaker in the Sonos App.

Yes, this is the method I have always used.  Have just rebooted my router and (for now), my older speakers are back on via Airplay.  Fingers crossed it is fixed.  Never occurred to me to reboot after the update… was on the phone to tech support for ages trying to figure out separate issues with the Roam.

I saw a recent post that suggested an issue with AirPlay 2 and WiFi 6. Is your router set up to do a version of WiFi beyond 4? My understanding is they’re supposed to be backwards compatible, but if I recall correctly, this person was having issues, although I have no idea if those issues were with Sonos, or Apple.
