SUB Gen 1 compatibility with S1 App

I have recently purchased a used SUB Gen 1 to use with my existing Sonos system.  I am on the S1 controller because we have some early components that are only compatible with the S1 App.  When I try to add the SUB to the system the S1 app states it can't be added because it is only compatible with the S2 App.  I have tried a factory reset but this hasn’t solved the problem  

Can anyone offer a solution?

Update, found out how to downgrade the SUB to S1 using the S2 app
