Sonos Sub gen 2 rattle

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an annoying rattling noise with my Sonos Sub Gen 2. The issue happens mostly during movies, especially in low frequency scenes with deep bass. It is less noticeable with music, but still present at times.

What I’ve already tried:

  • Factory reset

  • Trueplay tuning multiple times

  • Moving the Sub to different locations in the room

  • Switching connection from WiFi to Ethernet (currently wired)

The rattling still occurs regardless of placement or connection method.

Has anyone experienced something similar with a Gen 2? Did it turn out to be a hardware issue or was there a specific fix?

Usually that is a foreign object that has gotten inside. If you pick the Sub up and rotate it around do you hear anything moving?

It’s not really a rattling noise. It’s more like multiple popping sounds. It’s obviously my fault for not explaining it accurately before, but it’s quite difficult to describe in words.

In any case, I’ve checked carefully and there’s nothing that would suggest that something has fallen inside the subwoofer.

Try to make a recording  of the sound and call support so they can hear it.

Mine sub is doing the exactly same thing on extremely low frequencies!

I think it’s a sub 1 but can’t remember?

let me know if anyone finds the solution…

Best bet, if you’re interested in a Sonos solution, rather than a Community solution, is to call Sonos Support to discuss it.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

Due to its age, this may be a new hardware issue for SUB ver 1. In the past such reported noises have been due to stray objects introduced through the ports. I can imagine that an internal piece of hardware has come loose and is now rattling. This could be a simple physical fix if the SUB is disassembled, however, don’t attempt to disassemble yet because SONOS may offer a discount against a new unit, but only if the original unit has not been disassembled.

I note that your profile indicates that this is a SUB GEN2. It also shows that you are in the UK. There are 3rd party SONOS repair companies available in the UK.
