I have 2 Sonos Gen 3 subs, one works great, the other developed a rattle with low bass and is blown (sounds like a fart) (which I didn’t think could happen, didn’t have the sub volume up too much, just at (+3).
Called CS and after tweaking and updating, they agreed it’s defective. The problem is the only solution is to send it back and buy a new one with a 30% discount (but the subs cost $799). So my sub lasted 2 years without any abuse. That is disappointing. Should I buy another sub or is this common?

‘yep looks like that is my option, I do like having 2 subs in the room, it’s a big room.
UPDATE: Sonos heard my exemption plea as my blown sub was as it turns out when I researched when I bought it, just 14 months old and have agreed to send me a replacement. So all is well that ends well.

Glad you were able to get your sub replaced. However, l’m having trouble understanding your post outside of the fact that your sub will be replaced.

My sub began to rattle with low bass notes and I came to the conclusion that the speaker was blown. Spoke to Sonos about it and they agreed that it was broken (after trying a few things including rebooting and upgrading). At first they offered a 30% discount on a new sub but after I called them the other day I requested an exemption to the 1 year warranty when I reminded them that the sub was actually only 14 months old. So they have agreed to send a replacement sub.
Received my replacement Gen 3 sub today and integrated it into the system (An Arc and another sub) and after a little tweaking with the settings (at first it wasn’t recognizing the additional sub) it is now added. Nice to have 2 subs once again.
I use this system for tv viewing and the subs don’t really have much to do with normal programming, you really only hear the subs get some boom when a commercial comes on. That’s why I was surprised that one of my subs had a blown speaker.
Sub setting right now is +7. What is the max that is considered safe for these subs? I know they go to +15 but I’m not going that high.
Safe would be one beyond max. Anything from max and below would be fine.

Thanks, I have heard that the Sonos is designed that you can only push it so far but after having a blown speaker in the sub at +3, I am a little leery.
It’s a digital device, designed for use at potential maximum. It would be odd to sell anything that couldn’t take full amplification, Sonos would likely be liable if they did so. If I were guess, your previous device failed for other reasons. Neither of my gen 2 subs have failed, with years and years of ownership. One of them was definitely an ‘open box’ purchase at Best Buy, I don’t recall if the second one was, but they’re both going strong.
Thanks. I have 2 subs, one is from 2001 going strong but the other failed within the year of 2024 into 2025 by the tell tale sign of a rattle. At first I actually thought something in the room was rattling with a low bass note but upon further investigation when I wasn’t lazy found out that the rattle was internal. Guess it happens, all good now, replacement sub is installed.
Yes Mother Nature is never fair. Specifically with SUB, a small child or critter can introduce a foreign object through the SUB’s ports.
You can get or make a speaker cloth cover for the Sub, or several folks sell grills to go over the openings and prevent things from getting inside.
If you have kids, critters or big bugs I’d recommend using one of the above.

Glad you are getting (or have received ) your replacement sub. I’m a bit curios as to why you find it necessary to have the sub EQ @ +7; based upon your use case. I have dual subs in a 20 x 18 x 8 room and sub EQ is neutral after TruePlay tuning (see diagram below).
There are four (4) possibilities that may have led you to set the sub EQ @ +7:
You have a much larger room and/or open space
You’re not able to use TruePlay.
You haven’t experimented with sub placement options
You just prefer a boomier sound

I have a really large room 35 X 20 so the two subs which are by the tv at one end of the room (one behind the stand on the left and the other out towards the wall/ corner on the right), similar to your diagram. So the boost to +7 seems to work but it iwas adjusting the phase from 0 to 180 seems to have really helped the most.
Got some nice bass response today while watching The Accountant from Amazon Prime. Not boomy at all.
This system is primarily for movies/tv so a little extra boom is good. Music of course benefits from tighter bass.
