Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum.

I hope I'm writing in the right section, if not I apologize.

I'm asking for your help on the "Sonos Five" product.

I just bought it but I have some doubts, I can't adjust the highs and lows through the application, I move the cursor but nothing changes, while the balance and volume work regularly.

What could it depend on?

I also have another problem with the sound, on the highs it is too bright/sibilant, while the mid range is not very present, could it change with the break-in time? the bass is fabulous!!!

Has anyone had the chance to compare the Era300 with the Five?

Can the Era 300 have more relaxed highs and a more present mid-high? For the bass, can I add a subwoofer because I don't think it's at the same level as the Five.

It's just my simple thought, but if it's worth it I could do it.

I’d try a reboot of your product. It might be a simple reload of the OS would help change your inability to change the EQ settings. 

If that doesn’t work, I would recommend that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing this problem, and call Sonos Support to discuss it. But don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here, they get sensitive about GDPR.

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

So I should do an exact restore?

Later I'll try and see if I can solve it, otherwise I'll send a diagnosis.

While for the differences between Era300 and Five, is it better that I open a dedicated discussion?

Solved with the reset.

Thanks a lot, do you know if Trueplay is available on the Five? I can't find it in the menu (maybe because I have an Android smartphone?) if so I'll try with my brother's who has Apple.

Android does not support TruePlay for the Five or any Sonos speaker. However, QuickTune is available for Era 100’s and Era 300’s. Click the links for more information.

Five vs Era 300

See the official Sonos comparison below. However, only you can really determine which sounds best to your ear based upon your environment, music genre and type (stereo or Spatial Audio) that you prefer. Personally, I have a stereo pair of Era 300’s and Five’s both with Subs. My preference is smooth jazz in stereo as my go-to music. Therefore, I lean toward my Five’s as they are designed for high-fidelity (for my ear).

I also listen to jazz and classical music, I don't think a very spatial sound is necessary, but as you rightly said the only way is to try (I'll probably also order an Era 300 to make the comparison).

For TruePlay I go with my brother's apple ok, once set the sound remains fixed even on android right?

Another question please, is there a way to turn off or put the Five in standby? (or other sosnos devices?) I had to unplug the power plug otherwise it continued to play.

Does the Sono Five have voice commands?

Curiosity, if I connect it with etherent cable and I don't associate other speakers, does the sono five still send a wifi or wireless signal out? (I have some devices sensitive to these things and I don't want to create interference).

As I recall, once TruePlay is set up, there is a switch in the Android controller to turn it off and on, as desired. It is just the process of setting it up that requires the appropriate iOS device.

All Sonos devices (there is no Sono that I’m aware of) go into low power mode a few minutes after not streaming anything. They do not have on/off switches. 

The Sonos Five, per the FAQ on the sales page at https://www.sonos.com/en-us/shop/five-white#tech-specs does not have a built in microphone, but can be controlled by an external device that acts as an input for your voice.

You have been very helpful, I have solved almost everything (I just need to understand if and when it goes into standby) because I can't turn off the power every time -:))) at the very least I can put a controlled socket.

A bizarre question! Do you have any idea how strong the wireless signal that the Five 5 emits is, I think it is always active to transmit even if it has no other devices paired, right? or it activates if combined with other devices (Subwoofer or Satellites).

I ask because I have a very small house, I know that phones, 5G antennas, Bluetooth and many other things are worse, but I would like to avoid having a "Wireless" signal always near me, even some user manuals recommend not to be too close to these devices.

No idea, honestly. You may want to call Sonos Support directly to discuss it, but I suspect that isn’t information they would have, either. 

I’ve seen the number 10 minutes tossed around for entering low power mode, I’ve never tested. Support would likely have a ‘real’ number.

Given your WiFi concerns, I do find it odd you’ve chosen to go with a WiFi speaker system.

I contacted support let's see if they have more precise information for these questions, then I'll let you know what they tell me.

You're right the choice is "anomalous" and questionable, I find myself in a situation where I will have to be for at least a year (moved for work) the only solution is an amplified device, but unfortunately they are all tied to WiFi.

I found a solution, that is I always listen to classical music or Jaz so I use only two radio channels, it can happen that I change and when I do it I activate the WiFi for 10 or more minutes to be able to search for other stations.

I know that there are some systems of this type with which once configured with WiFi I can go with a network cable and they work, Sono Five can do it, that is I turn on and listen to the station previously left in memory without the need for active WiFi.

Now I read about this particular thing that Sonos speakers have, that is, they automatically create an autonomous wireless network to be able to communicate with all the other devices (probably other brands do this too, but not all).

Of course, if even with the Ethernet cable connected and WiFi disabled I find myself in a situation where a sort of WiFi is automatically created by the device itself, I think I will have to change the type (See Naim MU-SO2, Cambridge Evo One, Tehcnics SC 70MKII).

I will give you news as soon as possible.

Perhaps you could also consider a (rather old-fashioned) device called a “radio”? No wifi at all. And when you switch it off, it’s off.

In your case, I’d certainly be turning off all electricity in the home. The amount of RF created in the walls by normal power transmission would likely be as much, albeit in a different spectrum, as a WiFi signal .

Ok I'll go back to the candles and solve it....😊

The little I can do, even if it's zero I'll try to do it, I have some devices that are sensitive to interference, even if this idea is very questionable, trying it costs nothing especially because there is a choice... plus I don't like being too dependent on smartphones!

It's too restrictive to have to use it even to listen to some music, but these are personal thoughts and choices, I understand that not everyone thinks about it this way.

I had an exchange of emails with the support.

Very confusing situation, always vague and unclear answers... incredible! I didn't even ask other people.

In any case I solved almost everything on my own, the cable connection is fine, for the various WiFi signals I gave up, no one knows how to answer, in any case everything works correctly, it's fine like this.

I only noticed one strange thing, in the Sonos application for recommending the Five there is no Trueplay with calibration via microphone, I also inserted an Era300 on the same Android smartphone and in its menu (when I select that device from the application) in the settings I also have the trueplay item???

Do you know anything about it? Same smartphone same applications same products Sonos brand, on the Five there is no Trueplay on the Era 300 it is present.

The differences? Era300 a little more open as a sound, the five more HiFi with more present bass, it would be interesting to try an Era300 with the subwoofer....

On Android the Trueplay only works with speakers that can do Trueplay via their microphone, like the Era’s. The Five’s do not have a microphone, so will only Trueplay with an iPhone.

Ok so Era 300 does it with its microphone (maybe even better) while the Five uses the external one of the Apple smartphone, did I understand correctly? (sorry I'm using the translator).

I would like to add a subwoofer to the Sonos Five.

In your opinion, does the Five in this configuration open up in the medium-high range?

I read online that by adding a Subwoofer, part of the low frequencies are directed to the subwoofer and the Five benefits in detail.....

I have no idea if this is reliable or not.

Another option is to add another Five, but by doing so I think it only increases the stereo effect without variations in the medium-high range, right?

Another Five will let you create a stereo pair. The frequencies will not change because they have the same internal amplification and speakers. It will open the soundstage. A Sub is needed for more frequency range.

Does the Sonos Five have Loudness on the application?

On mine it is not there while on the network I see that it is present (see screenshot).

Do you have any idea why the Sonos Fives don't pair as stereos? I have two in the same "dining room" with the same name but the left one always plays.

Both have a network cable connected to the Router and Wifi activated. If I set it as a double speaker, however, they both play (I think I should only lose the stereo effect).

I specify that the speakers are positioned "horizontal" vertically, I don't have space.

That seems odd. The only reason I can think of that they could not be stereo paired would be if they’re not updated to the same firmware version. I would double check in the controller and make sure they’re both running the latest. 

For what it’s worth, however, while they look similar, a PLAY:5 gen 2 and a Sonos Five can not be stereo paired, but they can be grouped.

If the software update doesn’t work, I’d call Sonos Support directly to discuss it.

Please explain what you mean by “the same name”. Even if you have them in the same room one should show as “Dining Room 1” and the other as “Dining Room 2” or some other separate/distinguishing identifier.

@ Aereogetlam: The products are the same with updated firmware.

I managed to get them to work in stereo (at least I think so because it gives me L+R channel and I think it's correct) by deactivating the Wireless connection on both "Five" devices (both on the modem with cable) I don't understand why with the WiFi active I only hear the right channel.

@AjTrek1: You're right sorry, if configured in the same room it gave me Dining Room 1 and 2 with the two separate volume controls.

Now in stereo it only gives me "Dining Room" with Left Five and Right Five.

For now it seems to work, with the assistance I will investigate further why they don't work with WiFi active on both devices from the Sonos application.

I also put them in vertical position, the manual says that they should be automatically recognized as right and left channel, but I don't have space to leave them like that, I hope they work well in horizontal.......

Tomorrow the Subwoofer arrives so I have defined the system.
I'll let you know if everything is ok
