sonos fail

It is frankly incredible how utterly crap the sonos app is. Even when it was working a couple of weeks ago it took minutes to get any of my sources to play and 10 sevonds even to change the volume (though the sound was great!). But now, when I wanted to use the speakers for something other than the TV, I started the app and it says no products found (even though I can see two products in front of me working with the tv) and "Go to system settings". (And what and where is my system by the way? I've only got speakers and a phone app). Pressing the system settings button takes me to "update network" and "set up a new system". The first doesn't apply as if I've not changed my router and the second, well I never had an old system as I've already pointed out.

I've tried rebooting my phone. I'm going to try switching the speakers off and on.

The updated SONOS system uses the network differently than the original versions. Some router default settings do not support the new scheme very well.

SONOS requires more robust network support because the players are constantly chatting with each other. Web browsing, email, movies, and similar, are dialogs between a remote server and a single network client.

Ian7878,

Which router/Gateway are you using?

Hi Buzz, Router is EE brightbox however I don't use the WiFi on that and instead have a tplink archer access point that covers the whole house.

Ian mate thanks for your input. Wondering if you might be able to assist connecting my Beam to wifi/Sonos app. This is my situation:

  • Sonos Beam (Gen 1). Was packed away for 1.5 years in between moving house.

  • recently moved place and have unpacked and want to set up. Connects to TV. Won't connect to app or wifi.

  • wifi is 5G. I turned off band steering and now splits two wifi accounts: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Still won't connect to the network / network not visible.

  • did a factory reset. Without Ethernet cord connected, Beam flashes orange and white (no green).

  • when connect to Ethernet cable, turns green after factory reset.

  • with Ethernet plugged into modem and Beam, I can connect through app and get as far as needing to update the system before I receive an "Error: 1000" and can't proceed any further.

  • spent three hours with Sonos who couldn't find a solution.

  • does anyone have any idea or potential way around this? Have tried EVERYTHING!

Right now, it connects to my TV through HDMI but I have no luck connecting it to the app.

FYI: I'm with Optus, modem is ultra wifi 5G.

I also had a similar issue with a Dyson Air Purifier (couldn't connect to 5GHz) but the changing of bandwidth to 2.4GHz has fixed that issue and I can now connect..

Thanks so much!

After such a period in storage and with the number of software updates over the last 12 months, I suggest that you call Sonos technical support.

If this happened to me I think I would ensure I've got the latest version of the app, power off all my other sonos devices, connect my beam to my network via ethernet, do a hardware reset, then leave it for a few hours or overnight hoping automatic updates will take place, then try to connect it to my app.

Sonos devices and app chatter incessantly to each other, and the above is based on the theory, (unbacked by any evidence of course!) that beam needs some quiet time to get the latest updates.

Those are good steps normally but if the firmware of the device is too old, then auto updates won't work.

Thank you for your replies, much appreciated !

I guess I’ll leave it in the hands of Sonos - currently with them! Wish me luck…. :/

Update: Sonos currently offering me 30% off to purchase a new unit. Am I unreasonable to think this isn’t acceptable? While the Beam might be out of warranty, it still works (when connected via HDMI to TV). It’s simply an issue of updating the firmware and connecting it to my network/app.

any thoughts/opinions/advice welcomed.

thank you!

30% is a lot better than most places offer on out of warranty replacements.

Did they say it was an internal failure?

Did they try to push a firmware update to it, when it was hooked to Ethernet?
