Some Sonos speakers won't join Google Nest Pro network

Like many others, I’m having difficulties connecting my Sonos speakers to a Google Nest Wifi Pro mesh network.

My Arc, Move, Five, and Amps are connected fine.  My Sub and two Ones aren’t.

Tech support had me factory reset speakers, reconnect them, restart my Nest routers, round and round for about 5 hours, and eventually everything connected.  That was two weeks ago.  Today the Sub and Ones are off the network again.  I factory reset them and tried to re-add them but that failed.

I’ve read the threads on this topic but they are all closed so I thought I would start this new one.

Here are a couple details I think make my situation particularly difficult:

  1. Not all of my Sonos are close enough to each other to see the Sonos network, so I can’t rely purely on SonosNet.  Instead, I have wired two Nest routers to each other over a long distance.  All Sonos can therefore see my wifi network.  I also have Nest routers that are not wired together.
  2. None of my Sonos are close enough to the primary router to be wired to it in normal use.  (But I’m not sure this would help anyway given point 1.)

My Arc/Sub/Ones are close enough to a Nest router that one of them could be wired to it, but it is not the primary router.

Thanks for any advice.

My advice to others is:  Do not buy the Nest Wifi Pro.  Even if you don’t use Sonos, is it is a very buggy router, not at all like the previous Google Wifi, which was rock solid.  The Nest Wifi Pro often picks a device it hates and won’t let that device connect for days or weeks at a time.  Eventually it will let that device connect and will pick some other device to hate.  I’m in a rural area with very low interference.  It is very clearly a software bug because often the hated device can still connect to the guest network.

I’m putting this under “Advanced setups” because anything involving Nest Wifi Pro is somewhere between “advanced” and “hopeless”.

Hey guys,

I have 2 ERA 100s and 2 Roams. I have Spectrum internet and had to get a new router (6E) and could not reconnect my Sonos system. The sonos team told me this is a known issue with the new routers from Spectrum. I also had issues connecting other devices back to my network (garage door opener, etc.). I bought a Nest Wifi Pro 6E system and all my other devices magically were able to reconnect to the system, but the Sonos system would not work. I was on the phone with Sonos twice for over an hour and, ultimately, they noted that I needed to contact Google to adjust settings on the router. I have 2 Google Nest Wifi Pro 6E routers set up in a mesh configuration. I called google and they simply had me change the DNS server setting to custom and set the primary and secondary to a google server and magically the Sonos system is working perfectly now. I hope this helps someone else as I was so incredibly frustrated, and it turns out, it was a super easy fix!

For what it’s worth, I had the same connection problem and it got solved by “pinning” the IP address for my Sonos Era 100 in the Google Home app settings of my Nest Pro WiFi. Then I did a factory reset of the Era 100 and rebooted my two Google Nests.
I also enabled IPv6 at the same time, so I don’t know if that had any impact – but it works now!

This was my solution for getting it to work with a Google Mesh Pro:

  1. Unplug all of the secondary mesh access points
  2. One at a time, reset your Sonos devices and then pair them to the main access point
  3. in the Google Home app go to Wifi > Network Settings > Advanced Networking > DHCP IP Reservations and give each Sonos device a fixed IP address
  4. Once you’re done you can plug your other access points back in

I’m running a Google Mesh Pro with one main and two secondary access points, all connected via wired backhaul.

Phinneus’ solution worked for me. It's worth noting pairing only worked for me when not connected via Ethernet to the router. Sometimes Sonos requires a hard connection to update firmware during g the pairing process. If this happens, I found success connecting via Ethernet to update and then factory reset to connect wirelessly. Major pain, but it seemed to work.
