Hello,

This may be a bit bespoke, but I’ve brought my two old Play:5s (recently upgraded home) to the office and I want to make a wired setup through the ethernet (using the S1 app). As you know, I cannot do the initial setup through the company WiFi because Sonos will not work through wireless that requires a corporate login/password to connect.

I swear I had this working several months ago, but I’ve moved offices and can’t get it working again.

I know that I can create a hotspot on my computer run a Sonos network off that, but then how do I switch the connection to ethernet only? When I try connecting the ethernet to the Sonos and cut the hotspot the connection fails. I’ve talked to IT and they have no problem with me using the Sonos and they say there is nothing specific they are doing through the network to stop the connection so long as I can get it set up myself. They even gave me a gigabit switch they had laying around to run ethernet to both speakers.

Is there no way to just plug the ethernet into the Sonos as the starting point and create the Sonos Net from there? I find it really annoying to have to do all the set up from my phone app rather than through the computer.

Has anyone been able to get something like this set up?

Thanks,

I’m not sure you’re going to get a lot of support from Sonos Support directly, since this is really an odd case.

I’m trying to think this through, but this community may need some extra information. You say you’ve created the hotspot on your desktop machine, and wired that device, and the Sonos speakers to the Ethernet switch, and connected your phone to that hotspot? Where are you playing music from? Are these PLAY:5 gen 1 or gen 2s?

I’m wondering, when your desktop device switches back to the corporate network, is it switching subnets, which would mean the Sonos software would no longer be able to communicate with the speakers, be they wired or wireless. Any controller would have to be on the same subnet as the speakers. Is the point at which you lose connection the point where you change your desktop device’s Ethernet connection?

Since the IT guys seem so amenable, can they not just whitelist the two speakers by MAC address, so they automatically connect to the office network, without requiring the ‘sign in’? That way you could ensure they’re on the same subnet as your normal connection, although they’d be open to control from any Sonos controller on your office’s network.
