I have a Sonos Ray connected to my tv. When I switch from music with Sonos to the tv, I cannot control the sound with the tv controller. I would like to remove the Ray from my Sonos system. How to do that?

I’d leave the Ray in your router, and connected to your TV. Seems like you have greater issues with IR connection between your TV remote and your Sonos.
There are several possibilities…it could be as simple as replacing the battery in your remote. Or, there could be something occasionally blocking the IR signal to the Ray. Check to ensure nothing is getting in the way between the two. That may require checking the Sonos website to be sure where the IR receiver is on the Ray, or it could be in sunlight, or even if you have a plasma TV it could be ‘blocking’ the signal…all possibilities.
It might not be a bad idea to call Sonos Support to discuss it.
When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system. And can likely tell you if there is an issue with the electronics in your Ray.
You’ve confused me, perhaps with too much information, so I have questions.
Why remove the Sonos Ray from your Sonos system?
The Ray works using IR for TV volume. If you switch over to play music, it turns off the IR receiver, so you’d need to control the volume using a Sonos controller, and not your TV’s remote. The Sonos controllers work via WiFi, not IR.
If you power down (unplug from the wall) your Ray, it will disappear from your router, eventually, just not immediately. Your router maintains a ‘memory’ of the connection for a short amount of time, usually a day or two, but you can change that if you desire in your router’s DHCP settings…something I generally don’t recommend. You might try, after unplugging your Ray, rebooting your router, but some will ‘forget’ on reboot, many/most will not. Since we don’t know what router you have, I’d be willing to bet it won’t.

The problem is the inability to change the volume of the Ray with the normal tv controller. BUT the most frustrating factor is that the ability to control the tv/Ray volume with the tv controller is inconsistent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not work. I am not very technically minded but it appears to me that the Sonos app does not want to give up the Ray when you turn on the tv. ( Did that make sense?) So when I turn on the tv, I can control the sound with the Sonos app but I want to control the sound with the tv controller.
Therefore I thought a solution would be to simply remove the Ray from the Sonos system. I already have a Move in the same room which satisfies my need for occasional music.

Make sure that nothing is physically blocking RAY’s IR receiver. There could be some user locations where IR is blocked. Also, there could be interfering background light that you might be blocking when your body is in certain locations. Are you more likely to have issues during daylight or nighttime hours?
