Can you hook external speakers to a Sonos Play 3?

If you mean 3rd-party speakers then no, not directly. To link 3rd party ‘passive’ speakers directly to a Sonos system/device you will need a Sonos Amp, or to link 3rd-party ‘active’ speakers directly, then use a Sonos port instead.
