Hi, my best mate recently passed away and he gifted me his SONOS system.

A Playbar, Sub, 3 x Play 3, 2 x One and a sub.

Unfortunately, he passed before deregistering but, that’s ok, I’ve carried out a password reset and with the permission of his Mum / Exec, I’ve changed the password so I can log in.

I am new to SONOS.

I have started with the Playbar, I’ve changed ownership to me (which was tricky) but, no matter how many factory resets I do, I can’t connect it to my wifi.

I add the new device (Via new system) get it working (whilst using an ethernet cable) yet when I go to

network / manage networks / update networks - continue then every single time I get the message attached - unable to update these products.

I have a Vodafone WiFi Hub Router, and I have the S2 app latest version.

Interestingly, I had the same problem with one of the Ones but, I hadn’t changed ownership on that - only the Playbar.

I am usually good with IT matters but, this has left me with a headache.

I have done a hard reset on the Router and it’s 2.4 GHZ

I appreciate this is old kit / tech but, I’ve never experienced something so awkward to get on line before!

If only they had bluetooth - I could've saved hours so far

All help very much appreciated - thank you.

The Sonos Playbar needs to be reset to change WiFi credentials: https://support.sonos.com/article/connect-sonos-to-a-new-router-or-wi-fi-network

Sympathies for your loss.

Depending upon whether he was using the older version of the control app or the new one (referred to as S1 and S2) the Playbar firmware may be too old to update to S2 in one step. You may be best off calling Sonos support and get them involved. They can provide “interim” updates to move you up to the current S2 release.

Condolences for your loss.

When you reset the Playbar, do not have it connected to Ethernet at that time. That will allow you to enter your WiFi credentials during the setup process.

As you are looking to register the devices against your own Sonos account, factory reset all the others as you add them to the system you create.

I recommend Factory Reset of all inherited units. This will erase all data that may track back to your mate and possibly cause trouble as the old accounts are shut down.

Thanks all, I finally managed this morning to connect the Playbar to the wifi!

I believe it was a combination of all of the advices above.

I needed to

a) connect via Ethernet

b) factory reset

c) transfer ownership of the system (that needed his password)

d) remove Ethernet

e) factory reset and then add the speaker again.

f) I then had the option of choosing the wifi

Without these steps, the speaker wouldn’t appear as a new device, without an ethernet cable, even after a factory reset.

Seems like I have to do this for every element.. a pain but, necessary. Thank you to all for your help
