The S2 to S1 downgrade tool is working in the app (provided you have updated the app).

Is this the advice you have tried to follow:

Use the latest S2 app to downgrade it to S1. The Sonos support FAQ has instructions.

Similar setup (existing S1 system only), but I am installing a new One SL.  After trying the downgrade option from the Visitor Help Center link and having no success, further research revealed that the One SL is the only device with a footnote indicating it will work with S1 if already part of an existing system, but that it cannot be added as a new device to an existing S1 system.

I'm not sure if I missed that caveat when I bought the device from Sonos a few months ago or if it was inadequately highlighted.

Any hope for the One SL in my current setup, or should I move on?

It has not been possible to downgrade a One SL for at least a year, maybe more. So I do not see a return for the downgrade function. You’d either need a One (that can be downgraded) or an SL that has never been upgraded to S2.
