S1 Controller obsolescence?

I'm wondering why I'm no longer able to play my Mixcloud content on my Sonos speakers. Adding my uploads to the queue, at first there's nothing (error 1002), but soon after the queue does appear. However, when I try to play the queue, nothing will play. If I try to play an individual song-mix "show" from the list of uploads, I get the error again, and nothing happens. I can play my bought content an Bandcamp okay in shuffle mode. I tried playing a Featured Playlist from Tidal, but got the error again and nothing. I'm not able to clear the Mixcloud queue that's still showing. When I try to play a radio station, after some spinning of the circle I get "Unable to play the radio station".

Is this a known problem with Sonos? If so, is it something that will ever be remedied?

Further investigation leads me to believe that Sonos is rendering my speaker relegated to the S1 Controller obsolete. Offering me a 30% discount on an upgrade is not something I want or should need to do. The old speaker sounded fine, and worked fie.

Boo to you!!!

Have you updated your speakers and controller recently? Error 1002 means there is a speaker, or speakers that did not complete an update.

There was an update earlier this month for the S1 app and speakers. You should make sure you have the latest update.

Hope this helps.

I did reboot my speakers and checked for updates. I’d already tried that, but without rebooting by unplugging and replugging first. As before, checking for updates, it said I was up to date — no update required. However I do get a screen that says I need a firmware update, but I can’t find a link to where I can perform one. The screen just says “refresh” (brings the same screen back) and Log Out. Logging out and back in just takes me to their products, making me think what I’m supposed to do is buy a new speaker.

I still can’t get the speakers to play my Mixcloud shows but it does play radio stations now.I could live with that. I like my Bandcamp content, but BBC Radio 6 and Radio New Zealand classical would be pretty good.

I’ve seen another complaint about Mixcloud, on the Dutch language forum. https://nl.community.sonos.com/stel-een-vraag-228987/mixcloud-werkt-niet-6778723

One more add to this. Haven’t been able to play MixCloud for a few days in the US.

Mgmoms:I can play my Mixcloud shows on iOS (iPad Mini). That’s always where I play it when I don’t play my whole queue with Sonos, as I had been doing fine for several years.

It occurs to me that since the problem seems to be with Mixcloud, not Sonos, maybe MixCloud changed the file-types.I  know they were converting my ALAC uploads down to 192kbs, as they did with all Pro Users (calling it HQ). Amateur (Free) Users got socked down to 64kbs, if memory serves. I know that at one time I tried to play some of my music files from my hard drive on Sonos but they wouldn’t play. I think because ALAC wasn’t a file type that played.

Now I’m sure many Pro Users probably complained about the bitrate shrinkage of their Mixes. Not me. To my ears 192kbs sounds excellent. Plus, listeners with different, perhaps lesser bandwidth might not be able/or need to listen with their devices to higher-rez music files. I upgraded to Pro myself mainly because I thought 64kbs might not sound too fantastic. I wasn’t too sure about 192 either, but in listening I had no complaints, especially with my old, now nearly obsolete, Play:5(Gen 1) picked up at a garage sale!

Maybe Mixcloud changed to not converting Pro Users uploads. Maybe that’s why mine won’t play but others will. Maybe I should try uploading a different format.

Mixcloud reaction

Hi there,

Thanks for your patience.

We’re aware that some users who previously accessed Mixcloud via Sonos are now unable to do so following a recent update. Based on our findings, this issue appears to be related to Sonos devices that no longer receive software updates, as Sonos has chosen to end support for them.

Unfortunately, since we don’t manufacture Sonos devices, we’re unable to provide further assistance. We recommend reaching out to Sonos Support for more information on device compatibility and possible solutions.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, and we appreciate your understanding.

Thanks,

Strange. I know of no ‘Sonos devices that no longer receive software updates’ that would be used to play music.

Sonos did warn the S1/S2 split could lead to a deterioration in services though. But this would be a Mixcloud choice.

Yeah, I was sent the exact same reaction verbatim. Not good news! I’m forwarding what i wrote above to Jodie. Maybe there’s some truth to it. I did suspect it was a Mixcloud update that threw a monkey wrench. I can still listen to Tidal. I can listen to radio stations. I can listen to my Bandcamp buys just fine. If all my uploads have been changed to a format that won’t work on my Sonos I don’t blame Sonos.

That would track with my understanding, @drümmkopf . I don’t think any changes have been made to S1 in a long time, other than security/bug fixes. It would be odd for Sonos to set up something ‘special’ for MixCloud, when all streamers use the same code to stream. I’d be betting on some change on the MixCloud servers that Sonos has been told to point to.
