Hi, looking for some help troubleshooting ongoing issues with Alexa and Sonos Voice Control on my Era 300 speakers. Hoping someone has experienced something similar or has suggestions.

My Setup

  • Arc Ultra

  • Sub 4

  • 2x Era 300 (rear surrounds, in a surround setup with Arc)

  • Voice assistants in use: Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa

  • Era 100s in various other rooms

  • TV connected via eARC HDMI to the Arc Ultra which is then set up as surround sound with the Sub 4 and the 2x Era 300 speakers.

What Happened

  • Initially, I had both voice assistants working fine on all three speakers (Arc + both Era 300s).

  • Everything was smooth for ~1-2 days.

Then I reconfigured my home network, included some VLANs for network segmentation and reconfigured the DHCP settings (lease lasted for 120 minutes so after 2 hours the speakers should have renewed with the new DHCP settings).

Side note: 2.4GHz WiFi network SSID and password stayed the same, so devices should have reconnected without any issue.

Post-Network Change Issues

One of the Era 300 speaker (“Speaker A”) (reset after losing connection):

  • Did not rejoin the network after the reconfiguration and disappeared from the Sonos app.

  • I followed Sonos’ reset instructions (unplug → hold Bluetooth button → plug back in until green light).

  • Successfully re-added it to the app and surround setup.

  • Re-added both Alexa and Sonos Voice Control, all worked fine at first.

The other Era 300 speaker (“Speaker B”) (not reset):

  • Had trouble during voice assistant re-setup:

    • Sonos Voice Control:

      • Setup completes too quickly (~10 sec).

      • Doesn’t respond to “Hey Sonos.”

    • Alexa:

      • Failed to sign in, gave a really generic error something like:

“Something went wrong, please try again later.”

      • “Try Again” just loops with no progress (Sonos should really give more descriptive errors, or an error code of some sort)

Temporary Success, Then Failure Again

  • The next morning, I retried setup on Speaker B:

    • Alexa setup finally worked.

    • Could use voice commands like weather and smart home controls.

    • Sonos Voice Control also worked.

  • That evening, both Era 300 speakers (A and 😎 stopped responding to voice assistants:

    • Alexa icon showed exclamation mark.

    • App prompted “Fix it” but:

      • Trying to sign in gave same “something went wrong” error again.

      • “Hey Sonos” also stopped working on both.

This cycle has now repeated for several days:

  • Mornings: try re-setting up both speakers, sometimes one work first try and the other doesn’t until trying a few more times. Sometimes both don’t work but ends up working after a few retries. Sometimes both works first try.

  • Evenings: both disconnect again. Same thing as morning, sometimes one work the first try while the other doesn’t, etc.

  • Sometimes it takes hours of retrying (restarting app, tapping “Try Again” repeatedly) before one or both reconnects.

Other Notes

  • Arc Ultra has had no issues, both assistants always stay connected.

  • Other Era 100s in different rooms are also working fine with Alexa and Sonos Voice Control. Did not have to do any re-setting up after the network reconfiguration.

  • Throughout all of this:

    • Both Era 300s continued to appear in the Sonos app.

    • They still play music or sounds from TV normally as surround speakers.

    • So it doesn't seem to be a Wi-Fi issue, only voice assistants are failing.

  • It is really troublesome to fully reset the Era 300 speakers as the socket is inside the wall with a hole for the cable to come out (for aesthetic purposes, which now seems like a really bad idea). So I would have to unmount the speaker in order to unplug it.

My Questions

  • Is this a known issue with Era 300s?

  • Could this be due to the surround setup?

  • Why would only voice assistant functionality drop while everything else (app visibility, audio playback) stays stable?

  • Is there anything else I can try to avoid the assistants disconnecting daily?

Any help or ideas would be appreciated, this has become a frustrating part of an otherwise great system.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @meepo, welcome to the Sonos Community!

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having issues with your Era 300s losing voice control.

I would advise against any further factory resets of your Era 300s, as doing so will also delete valuable diagnostic information. I’ve had a look in our internal database and the only issue I could come across relating to the Era speakers and voice assistants was that the microphone button would get stuck in the middle, however this doesn’t seem to be the issue you’re experiencing. To answer your questions:

  1. No, we have no known issues regarding voice assistants dropping out daily.
  2. I wouldn’t say so. Surrounds speakers used to have their microphones disabled when using Alexa and Sonos Voice, however this is no longer the case and shouldn’t cause issues.
  3. This I’m not sure about. A diagnostics after the issue could let us see why.
  4. Since this isn’t an issue we’re aware about, I don’t have any specific troubleshooting steps for you.

I would recommend submitting a diagnostics and reaching out to our support team. They have the necessary tools available to look into your system and see what’s going wrong and can help you resolve this issue. If possible, submit a diagnostic when the voice assistants on your Era 300s are working and then another after they stop working. If you can’t get a diagnostic of the voice assistants working without factory resetting, then ignore that one.

I hope this information helps!
