Audio Sync Beam Gen 2 and Sony Bravia A80J

Added a beam 2 to my Sony a80j. Connected using supplied hdmi cable via eARC output.

Immediately had annoying audio sync issues. Have restarted everything (tv, soundbar, cable box) multiple times with no difference. Have played with audio settings on tv to no effect.

Problems are only when watching cable tv (Arris TiVo box). Streaming apps on tv seem to work fine. Can sometimes fix cable issues with Dialogue Sync on Sonos app but it’s never perfect and issues vary by channel. Plus have to adjust sync on app every time I switch to streaming.

After several weeks of this I am very close to removing the beam altogether and accepting it is a complete waste of money.

I’ve tried all settings on tv but is there an agreed upon best set of settings? Is there anything I can change in the cable box settings? Any other suggestions welcomed.

Current tv settings fyi (have tried multiple combinations)

av sync auto

eARC auto

digital audio out PCM

pass through mode auto

Dolby Audio. No other devices connected to tv. Tha ks

Try setting eARC Mode on the TV to OFF. You don’t need eARC with your setup.

A little better. But still a C+ as opposed to a D or F.  Thanks for the advice.

Now try this:

Disconnect everything from the TV and unplug the Beam and TV from power for a couple of minutes. Plug everything back in but keep everything disconnected. Run TV Setup in the Sonos app and follow the app instructions. When the app instructs you, connect the Beam to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port using the Sonos-supplied HDMI cable. After the Beam has been successfully connected, connect the TiVo box to the TV.

Thanks. Tried this combo and if anything, things got worse. Will restart everything though and look again.

What is the audio setting on the Arris TiVo box currently set to? Do you have any other devices connected to the TV?

Will try tonight as involves a bit of effort to access power. Curious as to why to turn off eARC. Doesn't that kill some of the Beam 2 features, or is that only if I have additional speakers?

eARC is only required for lossless audio formats like Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, and Multichannel PCM. The TiVo box shouldn’t require eARC because it doesn’t support lossless audio.

I recommend disabling eARC because sometimes this can cause the issues you are describing.

Cool. Would I lose something though on things like Prime or Netflix? Sync is more important than quality at this point.

No, especially if you are referring to the TV’s native Prime Video and Netflix apps. The main devices that require eARC are Blu-ray players, Apple TV 4K, Xbox, and PS5.

Did the process as described. It did help. More than anything else. Maybe up to a B or B-. Up to me now to decide if the sound bar is worth having the audio sync being slightly off on some channels.

Curious as to why connecting to the cable box last makes a difference?

Regardless, thank you @GuitarSuperstar for the advice. Very much appreciated.

Update to this after two months. Audio sync issues re-appear almost every day with cable box (all other sources such as youtube, Netflix are fine). Instead of unplugging everything every time this happens, a quick and reliable fix is to toggle the Sony tv sound settings from eARC Auto to Off, or from eARC Off to Auto (i.e. switch to opposite of existing setting). Simply toggling the setting seems to fix the issue for a while. This is annoying, and I still might remove the Sonos, but at least it works.
