Hi - have lots of existing Sonos kit bought 2012 - 2015. Have been managing to use with S1 controller, but about to modernise a little by purchasing a couple of Era100’s (the Bluetooth and LineIn features appeal).

According to the Sonos support page, I should be able to use the Era100’s and the newer Sonos app with my Play:1, Play:3 and Boost kit (as they say these support both newer Sonos app and the S1 app).

Are they correct?

Incidentally, I have always relied on the SonosNet for connectivity (first with Bridge, then with Boost) and connectivity has been excellent, no dropouts.

The website says that the Era100 can only either use cabled Ethernet or domestic WiFi - how would this play with the rest of the (older) Sonos kit using SonosNet via the Boost? Or does having the Era100 in this setup mean that SonosNet is a no-no, and everything would be reliant on domestic WiFi?

Thanks.

You are correct. The 100s are not compatible with Sonosnet. But you should be able to run all the S2 compatible speakers wirelessly as well and remove the Boost from your network to reduce the chances of network interference.

It is possible to run Sonos devices with some using SonosNet and others using your router’s Wi-Fi (Era 100s) in the same Sonos system.

If your devices are currently on S1 you will need to decide which devices you wish to upgrade to using the newer Sonos app.

Devices cannot be shared or music grouped between the old and new apps. Each app is treated independently from the other, but you can upgrade/downgrade devices between apps, depending on device app compatibility, if you are keeping an S1 system.

As you mention, the Play:1s, Play:3s and Boost are all compatible with the new app. You may wish to leave the Boost wired, but upgraded to the new app along with the Play:1s and Play:3s. The Era 100s can be added to this new system. If the Era 100s are replacing existing speakers then the changed location for the older speakers may impact on the performance of SonosNet. It really is just a case of trying it to see if performance is still the same or if you wish to try a completely wireless system with the older Sonos devices and the new Era 100s.
