Hello!

My music library resides on a NAS system and I use the Android app.

I rip my own mp3s and the software I have used sometimes created a .m3u file when I rip a whole album.  Most of these playlists show up under the ‘Imported Playlist’ section of my Music Library in the app. I thought I would try creating my own .m3u playlists of various tracks.

I am using the VLC media player (Linux) and a text editor to create the files.  VLC created playlists use a URL to the file  (eg file:///home/Music/AC-DC/High_Voltage/05-TNT.mp3).  I didn’t think Sonos would understand this so I have a version of that file that uses relative paths (eg AC-DC/High_Voltage/05-TNT.mp3). I have Sonos update the content and neither playlist shows up.  I even deleted and re-added the Music library and neither shows up.

I tried creating a new directory and putting the playlists in there and neither the folder nor the playlists show up after rescanning the music library.  I am out of ideas on how to troubleshoot this.  Can anyone offer any pointers?

thanks,

MikeS

Thank you for the reply Corry P!

Turns out it was user error! :-)  I did not properly copy the .m3u to the NAS so when I ran the re-sync with the Music Library Sonos did not see it.  Once I fixed that problem it worked just fine.

Thanks for your help!

Hi @mfs2112

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Sorry to hear of this issue you are having with your m3u playlist files not being imported as they should.

I too use m3u files and see no such issues, as shown:

You are correct in using relative paths - this is, as far as I am aware, a requirement.

I did take a look at the contents of one of my m3u files, as made by WinAmp:

#EXTM3U #EXTINF:214,Ace Of Base - All That She Wants Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\01 - All That She Wants.mp3 #EXTINF:231,Ace Of Base - Don't Turn Around Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\02 - Don't Turn Around.mp3 #EXTINF:238,Ace Of Base - Young And Proud Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\03 - Young And Proud.mp3 #EXTINF:192,Ace Of Base - The Sign Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\04 - The Sign.mp3 #EXTINF:224,Ace Of Base - Living In Danger Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\05 - Living In Danger.mp3 #EXTINF:200,Ace Of Base - Voulez-Vous Danser Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\06 - Voulez-Vous Danser.mp3 #EXTINF:257,Ace Of Base - Happy Nation Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\07 - Happy Nation.mp3 #EXTINF:232,Ace Of Base - Hear Me Calling Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\08 - Hear Me Calling.mp3 #EXTINF:234,Ace Of Base - Waiting For Magic (Total Remix 7'') Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\09 - Waiting For Magic (Total Remix 7'').mp3 #EXTINF:253,Ace Of Base - Fashion Party Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\10 - Fashion Party.mp3 #EXTINF:236,Ace Of Base - Wheel Of Fortune Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\11 - Wheel Of Fortune.mp3 #EXTINF:221,Ace Of Base - Dancer In A Daydream Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\12 - Dancer In A Daydream.mp3 #EXTINF:252,Ace Of Base - My Mind (Mindless Mix) Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\13 - My Mind (Mindless Mix).mp3 #EXTINF:258,Ace Of Base - All That She Wants (Banghra Version) Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\14 - All That She Wants (Banghra Version).mp3 #EXTINF:224,Ace Of Base - Happy Nation (Remix) Ace of Base - Happy Nation (U.S. Version)\15 - Happy Nation (Remix).mp3

I seem to be using the extended form of m3u - perhaps you are not and that is where the problem lies?. The “#EXTINF:xxx” tag refers to the length of the track in seconds. Perhaps you could try creating one such m3u file and see if that helps? As far as I am aware, both versions of m3u files are supported, but maybe there is an issue with importing the basic form. Note that the extended form must start with #EXTM3U.

I hope this helps.

Edit: my m3us have no gaps as shown above - it’s a formatting issue here on the community.

Edit2 : and my correcting a typo has made it even worse!
