Victrola stream carbon: very low sound on sonos

Dear community

I am asking for help as it seems I have a problem with my new Victrola: the sound is very low on my sonos devices, I don't understand why.  The wifi is very strong and sonos is working well. When I connect my TT Victrola to sonos it is well recognized but the sound is very low,  even with the volume at 100. Is it the preamp that would be down or an issue with the headshell? I cannot try it with the RCA output as my sonos devices are not from the last generation.

Thanks for your help!

Hello dear community

Just to let you know that I have received a new Victrola Stream carbon and it works perfectly fine with all my Sonos devices.  The sound is very good (even if digitalized ;-) and it is very easy to connect! So I recommend it!

I would perhaps contact the TT customer support desk and see if they can assist you - I’ve  not seen any others mention this low-volume issue in the past in the community here. What Sonos products are you playing the TT audio to?

Thanks for your reply,  I have a Move gen1, a beam, 2 play 1 generation 1, 1 play one SL and a play 3. I have tried different set up but always low sound. I have just tried it with the RCA connection on a basic amp and it is the same,  low sound.  So it might be the preamp integrated in the Victrola... I am afraid I have to bring it back where I bought it

Will let you know

Thanks

Thanks Gaff12

Mais où se trouve le fil de masse sur la victrola ? Est-ce la petite vis à côté de la sortie RCA? Et à quoi on doit connecter ce fil de masse?

En tous cas ce n'est pas un problème SONOS a priori

Merci

Dear community

Just to let you know that I managed to give the Victrola back against a voucher,  so I am considering now buying a pro- ject TT instead.

I am a bit confused with the connections:

If I plug the TT with the RCA output directly into a sonos Five (or an ERA 100?) will I still get an analog signal? Or it is converted anyway into digital?

Second question: if I still get an analog signal into the play five or ERA 100, if I stream it to other sonos devices,  then the signal will be digital of course on these other devices but still analog on the play five plugged into the TT?

I read in the forum that a wired connection is better than streaming directly from the TT to sonos devices,  and I agree with this.

I understand that the sonos line adaptator convert the analog into digital but not if we use the RCA to 3.5mm and plug it into the line in port of the sonos 5 or ERA?

Sorry for my ignorance but I am trying to get some answers before buying this time:-)

Thanks a lot

The line-in is digitized no matter what.  However, if you set it to uncompressed, it uses lossless PCM encoding and will be identical to the source.  The myth that digitization causes a loss of fidelity compared to a “pure” analog signal stems from the days when sound engineers were still applying analog techniques to digital recordings.  That was left behind in the 80’s.  The math states the analog out will be identical to the analog in, unless somebody screws it up, and they chips of today don’t screw it up.

OK thanks,  I am learning every day! So whatever the setup be, the sonos will play digital sound anyway. But as you say, probably the Sonos devices can "restitute" the sound quality provided by an analog TT. Anyway I don't pretend to be a purist and I'm not sure I would recognize the difference between an analog or digital recording...
