Also, what happens with the Roam is connected via WiFi, playing streaming audio, but also connected via BT to your phone? If you initiate audio on the phone, or maybe just receive a phone call, will the Roam automatically switch to BT audio, or does it need to manually be done? If it’s automatic, will that cause you to ‘lose’ your WiFi stream. (I’m guess it’s manual for that reason)
Roam still has 2 distinct modes - WiFi and Bluetooth - and holding the power button down for 2 seconds lets you switch between them. The LED next to the Sonos logo will show you which mode you’re in (White for WiFi, Blue for Bluetooth). This means that if your Roam is in WiFi mode, it doesn’t establish a Bluetooth connection to your phone, so your music won’t be interrupted by anything happening on your phone.
Thanks for the answers James! So given the information above, what is the procedure sharing an BT audio stream with the rest of your Sonos system? I’m going to guess that when you put it in BT mode while in WiFi range, you are still connected to the rest of your Sonos system. So, put it in BT, start streaming to the Roam over BT, then go to the Sonos app and group the Roam with other Sonos rooms?
Spot on! Putting the Roam in Bluetooth mode while in range of WiFi will let you group products together through the Sonos app as long as the Roam has been attached to that system in WiFi mode at least once.
Hi All
Been looking at non-sonos options for a portable speaker and this is in a good price bracket with good features .. Ticking all the boxes so far !!
One question waterproof yes but can it be used in the bathroom while im taking a shower so i can sing along to my favourite's…? (I do stress NOT in the shower….)
Cheers
Paul
Yes, you should note the IP 67 rating.
Is the Wireless charger waterproof aswell?
Is the Wireless charger waterproof aswell?
No. Earlier in the thread it was suggested the Roam be completely dry before charging.
Following the various stories of additional charges / taxes being applied by couriers on goods being imported into the UK can Sonos confirm that the UK price includes all tariffs, taxes etc etc that may get incurred as delivery for preorders is presumably from the continent?
Thanks
Can the Roam join a wifi network that has a login page, like in a hotel? This would make it the ultimate travel speaker.
Is it OK to permanently keep it on the Charging Stand?

I very much doubt it has that capability of dealing with hotel logins, but also that type of network usually separates all the clients from each other, so your phone would not be able to see the Roam.
You can get travel routers that create a shared network that you could use…. The router deals with the hotel login and shares out its own WiFi network for you to use. The hotel network only sees the one device connected and all your devices sit behind it.
They can be a little finicky to be honest and you could end up spending a fair amount of time getting it to work…. So it depends how long you are at the hotel.
would be easier to just use Bluetooth in that situation, to be honest.
I’d agree with BMF. The software Sonos uses hasn’t changed, so the speaker would not have the ability to connect to a password protected network. So, no hotel, no college/university, etc. Nothing has changed in that respect. A travel router is most likely the easiest way to deal with that.
I am wondering if the charging kit has a plug as well or jut the charger. The description has it but haven’t seen any pictures.
Includes: Roam, Wireless Charger, Power Adapter

It looks to me like you get the wireless charger and a USB power adapter, but no plug: https://www.sonos.com/en-us/shop/roam-and-wireless-charger-set.html
James L,
Is it possible that the ROAM includes (or could potentially include) the ability to use it as a portable trueplay setup device?
i.e. Use the Sonos app running on an Android device for example to kick off the trueplay function telling it to use the Mic on the Roam to perform trueplay setup for your OTHER Sonos devices on your network.
This would solve the “can’t do trueplay on Android devices because of the variety of mic’s etc” and delayed trueplay support for newer IOS devices etc.
Ross.

Yes, as airgetlam pointed out, Roam is IP67 rated which makes it dust and waterproof, so it won’t mind getting wet or steamy
Is the Wireless charger waterproof aswell?
No, the charger is not waterproof.

No, the same challenges other Sonos products face with captive portals are also present on the Roam. I do like BMFs suggestion of a travel router, though!
Is it OK to permanently keep it on the Charging Stand?
Yes, it will not damage Roam’s battery to leave it on the charger.

The Roam Wireless Charger does come with a 10W USB power plug, which can also be purchased separately.

Roam doesn’t include this functionality. I’ll definitely pass this feature request on to our development team, but we don’t have any other information to share right now.
Think the design and features on this are really good. Very tempted to replace the current bluetooth speaker I use in the shower, but probably won’t pre-order.
I’m a little disappointed the ability to transmit bluetooth into my Sonos system won’t be available via the Move though. Feels like a bit of a miss there. I know there are ways around this and I currently have a small bluetooth receiver in the aux of my 5 for this very reason, but this is a really neat feature and it’s a bit frustrating that it is lacking from the more expensive bluetooth speaker in the range.
It is entirely possible that feature requires specific hardware that isn’t in the Move, and is not just a simple update of the software.
Question about preordering this. What does preordering get you exactly? Will it ship BEFORE April 20th?
Question about preordering this. What does preordering get you exactly? Will it ship BEFORE April 20th?
Based on previous preorders Sonos has done, it means that they will try to ship the speakers out so that they arrive at your address before or on April 20th. When the Arc was released, some people got it as soon as a week before the release date. However, Sonos didn’t provide the firmware update so the speaker could be installed till the release date (or a day before, can’t recall exactly).
It’s worth nothing though that on planet COVID, supply is never guaranteed. With the Arc, they could not get all preorders out in time, and those that preordered later didn’t get the Arc on release date (mine came about a week later). So, it’s wise to ‘get in line’ early.
Also, with past preorders, Sonos doesn’t charge your CC till it ships, and I’d be shocked if this release is any different.
Sorry guys, but if a bluetooth stereo is still not available its dealbreaker for me.
I still consider it as biggest fail of my Move pair, and with even bigger portability of Roam, it simply makes no sense. Roam begs for portable use but inability to operate pair outside home WiFi, or a must to carry travel router along, kills the whole concept for me.
You made me buy 2x Anker Flare Mini for my travel purposes and come on guys, even those 50 USD devices can form the bluetooth pair.

I can understand your frustration and where you are coming from. From my perspective I just can’t imagine the need for a bluetooth stereo pair of Moves. I think that is a powerful enough speaker that unless you are trying to fill something large the one will be more than enough. To me it’s use case is great sounding small group speaker that you can take anywhere. I think in the Roam’s case, it’s use case anywhere, easily for one or two, more individually based. Campsite, check, beach/park, yes, Tailgating with your family, yep. I am not saying this to be a jerk or in a condescending way, I am just trying to understand what use case would require stereo sound as a must when you can do a pretty great job with a single Move, or in this case a Roam.
Hey everyone,
I thought I’d try to answer all the questions in this thread so far. Let us know if you have any other questions, and we’ll try our best to answer them!
- Are there wall mounts or other accessories, besides the charger, coming for the Roam?
I will be using this in the bathroom but as I’m severely disabled wheelchair user. I would like to install it semi - permanently in the bathroom without having to keep disconnecting it from the mount to charge in another room. Therefore a bathroom wall mount with a built in charger which if safety regulations permit, could be powered from the bathroom shaving socket would be nice.
I can understand your frustration ...
Thanks, for open mind.
The reason for me is STEREO. It changes a lot in my music perception and makes a experience significantly more pleasant - giving a feeling of instrument positioning, soundstage, the feeling that music appears directly in your head, not on one exact place in the room.
This is, what even single MOVE is missing. All the stuff like trueplay, omnidirectional spreading of sound, helps, but dont get experience even close to stereo listening. When I first heard the Move, I loved the sound of box itself but my first feeling was “and where is the second half?” Compared to my old desktop Creative T20 active speaker, the MOVE has obviously better sound quality, but the overall experience was still in favor of Creative. As I use pair of Move in stereo, I am very happy bunny. The only limit it has, that I need a full wifi coverage including eg patio, and I am unable to take MOVE with me eg to vaccancy spot, as reverting whole system to another wifi network is anything, but intuitive And therefore, I am dissaponted by the lack of stereo pairing in bluetooth, as it would solve all my objections easily. And its more hard to understand, if bluetooth is already in device.
The whole thing is more “escalated” with ROAM. As with better portability, it would be great device to take those with me for weekend stays, vacation, business trips, to many places outside my “home wifi”. Love the compact size, idea of QI wifi charging. Integration to a Sonos system is not necessary for this “travel” usage, I would most listen to my Tidal downloaded music.
What I am searching for is one portable stereo system, which I would use in Sonos ecosystem while at home, and mainly as bluetooth stereo set when outside. ROAM is frustrating from this point of view, as it is almost ideal solution, but absence of bluetooth stereo kills it.
(Just for sure: no offensive feelings in my heart, just bit of frustration I am just trying to provide open feedback and explain my case. And please appologize my English, as you recognized I am not native speaker.)
All the best. Vit

- Does stereo pairing work on Bluetooth as well as WiFi?
- No, though we realise it’s something our customers would like to see, so we’ll be looking into this in the future.
Hope they will looking into this in the future What do you think?
One more question ... the spec says that the Roam works from
41 ° F to 95 ° F (5 ° C to 35 ° C)... is that a mistake or what should it look like in summer / winter? Are these temperatures reached quickly today?

I can confirm those numbers are correct. We would not recommend putting Roam in extreme cold or heat for any extended period of time.
