Move 2 battery drain when off

Hi,

I bought a Move 2 recently and it's a great speaker. However, I noticed when switched off (long press on the back button until it chimes and disappears from app) it loses 2% charge a day. I contacted support who initially decided to replace the unit. The second unit arrived but it's behaving the same way. They're now saying it's expected. Weird.

Considering 3 hours of playtime at volume 40 uses about 10% of the battery that means, when it should be off, it's losing about 35mins of play time...a day.

I intend to use the speaker when outside gardening or away from the house. I don't want it sitting on a charger all the time, nor do I want the battery totally drained, neither of which are healthy for batteries.

I assume the official line will be something like "even when powered off is still doing some stuff" but why? That's what sleep mode is for. Its a portable speaker. If I turn it off it should be off and and drain levels should match what you would normally expect with a rechargeable battery.

It's such a shame. As it stands I'm going to return it.

Has anyone had this and/or found a solution to it? Maybe sonos can fix via firmware? Maybe the next version of the Move will fix it?

Thanks

Hi @GleannanIolair,

I’m sorry to hear that the Move 2 isn’t performing to your expectations.

I’m not sure why the support agent set up a replacement for your original Move 2, as the battery drain while powered off falls in line with our expectations of up to 2% charge loss per day. Losing up to 2% a day will still give you plenty of playtime before you return the Move 2 to the charging base, as we expect 24 hours of uninterrupted playback from full charge.

The Move 2 has been designed and is expected to ‘live’ on the charging base and we recommend returning it there when not in use, as leaving it on the charging base long-term won't reduce the battery life or damage it, though I do understand if you’re still in the mindset of returning the Move 2.

I hope this information helps.

Thanks @Jamie A . Can you confirm if the Move 2 charging is protected from overcharging?

It still means I need to leave the speaker on the charger to maintain battery health which i hadn't planned on.

Can you share any details as to why there is battery drain when turned off? With that level of drain it must be doing something.

Thanks

Hi @GleannanIolair,

When the Move 2 is placed on the charging base, it will use power directly from the charging base, circumventing the use of the battery and protecting it from overcharging.

Regarding the battery draining while powered off: it’s assumed that some core processes are still running on the Move 2 even when fully powered off, but I can’t say for sure if that is the case. I can’t explain exactly at the moment, but my colleagues and I are asking around internally for more information.
